Economic Development
Plans for a proposed 3 1/2-story apartment building on the former K House of Flowers site, 5241-49 N. Milwaukee Ave., were unveiled at a March 8 meeting hosted by Ald. John Arena.
Plans call for the project to include four apartments and eight outdoor parking spaces along a rear alley, with no storefront space.
Developer Tim Pomaville of Ambrosia Homes said that inspiration for the design of the planned frame-style building was taken from the existing Whistle Stop Inn at 4200 W. Irving Park Road, which was built in 1889 and was designated a city landmark in 1990.
The city's designation describes the two-story Whistle Stop as a "modest wood structure" which was common in Chicago neighborhoods in the late 19th Century.
Initial plans called for a larger building, but the parcel's irregular shape put constraints on the project.
Each of the apartments, including one basement unit, would measure 1,200 square feet and include two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a projected monthly rent of $1,850.
Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce David Wians has called for the first floor to include commercial space given that the site serves as a gateway to our business district. The Gladstone Park corridor study recommends retail space on the ground floor of new buildings.
