Cathy Daugherty, DKG International President
Keynote Speaker at OSO Convention
DKG International President to Visit Ohio

DKG/Ohio is excited to welcome the 2018-2020 International DKG President, Cathy P. Daugherty to Ohio’s State Convention, March 20-22, at the Embassy Suites in Dublin, Ohio.

As one reads her biography it is apparent that she has a deep abiding belief in all facets of our Society and possesses an overwhelming desire to share what DKG has done for her to inspire others. We most certainly welcome her with enthusiastic anticipation and look forward to her being among us during our state convention weekend.  Be inspired…as you continue to read her life’s commitment to Delta Kappa Gamma!

As International President, President Cathy, also chairs the Administrative Board, and is a member of the Educational Foundation Board of Trustees. Daugherty has been a member of Alpha Alpha Chapter in Virginia since 1989. She is the 2016 recipient of the Achievement Award, the Society’s highest honor, and a graduate of the 1997 Leadership Management Seminar. She has held numerous leadership positions at the chapter and state organization levels serving as Virginia State Organization’s editor (1997-2003), president (2003-2005), executive secretary (2005-2008), and parliamentarian (2015-2018).

At the international level, Daugherty has served on the Administrative Board as First Vice President (2014-2016) and Southeast Regional Director (2008-2010). She chaired the Educational Excellence and Professional Affairs Committees and served as a member of the Program of Work and Educational Excellence Committees. Daugherty chaired the Administrative Board sub-committee charged with proposing the Society’s first international project. She was point-person for the Schools for Africa project from its official adoption at the 2010 International Convention through July 2014, authoring all issues of the  SFA Newsletter . Last biennium Daugherty chaired the Constitution Committee and was charged with presenting proposed amendments to the convention membership in 2018. She is a frequent presenter, trainer, and Society representative to state organizations, regions, and chapters.

Daugherty retired from her nine-year position as a part-time Latin instructor and supervisor of Latin student teachers at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia in 2016. She retired earlier in 2007 after a 35-year public school career that included work as both a teacher and a supervisor for World Languages. She maintained a presence in the public-school setting through school year 2014-2015 as mentor to beginning teachers and reader for the Scholarship Committee of the National Latin Exam (NLE). Daugherty has written professional articles, contributed to foreign language scholarship as a chapter author, and made numerous presentations on classical subjects, especially those relating to pedagogy and teacher training.

“I created I Believe in ME! to work with ‘at-risk’ youth. I soon discovered that ALL young people are at risk without the right tools to manage their own mind.” – Rebecca Psigoda

In addition to being a truly happy person, Rebecca considers herself a lifelong student with a passion for knowledge that has enticed her to study everything from art to dance, engineering and etiology. Until 2015, she operated her own private holistic therapy practice in Columbus, Ohio, where she combined counseling with a variety of additional modalities that include: deep relaxation techniques, guided meditation, NLP, hypnosis, gentle massage, Reiki, healing touch, life coaching, and The Infinite Possibilities Program for a mind, body, spirit approach to therapy.

Much time and work have gone into making the March 20-22, 2020, DKG/OSO State Convention at the Dublin Embassy Suites a memorable and meaningful way for you to grow personally and professionally.  It is an exciting time to make new friends and reconnect with friends you rarely get to see and to share ideas with other chapter representatives.  You will meet Cathy P. Daugherty, the International President of DKG, and have the opportunity to hear about changes impacting DKG.

Bev Babbert of Delta Theta chapter has once again volunteered to organize and lead a preconvention trip, with lunch at the historic Spaghetti Warehouse, followed by a visit to the National Veterans Memorial and Museum across the street from the restaurant.  You will find the form to sign up for the trip in this issue of The Voice .

Plan ahead; come early to avoid the evening rush hour traffic. The Friday evening event, “Taste of Ohio/Taste of DKG VIP Jamboree,” promises to be a fun-filled kickoff to an amazing weekend of good food, good times and great fellowship. The ADSOEF meeting on Friday evening is open to all DKG members, as is the opportunity to be a part of the DKG/OSO Chorus. For those of you who are "night owls" and feeling adventurous, do consider the "fifteen minute dash" to the Hollywood Casino Columbus! Of course, Saturday will be busy with the Executive Board/General meetings, breakout sessions, the Birthday Luncheon, social time in the atrium, and the Presidents and Founders Banquet in the evening.  Sunday morning is always a special time with the Celebration of Life service and the Inspirational Breakfast.

For those of you who have already registered for the convention and booked your room at the Embassy Suites…YAY!!!  I look forward to seeing you there.  For those of you who have not yet made that commitment, I would like to share the poem below by Leila Koenig, DKG Colorado State President…with a few poetic modifications from our own State President, Diana Kirkpatrick.

EXPANSION
Ohio State Organization Expansion and Membership Committees met in a combined meeting on January 11, 2020.

As our committees travel down this road together we feel a lot like “The Little Engine That Could!”    We think we can, we think we can and are working hard to achieve our destination.

We will chug along to convention where we will unveil our new release of Ohio State Organization, Chapter Resource Guide.   We want to help your chapter reach a destination of renewed commitment, growth and excitement in Delta Kappa Gamma. It is not a magical cure but our hope is that it will motivate and enhance your dedication to your local chapter and the OSO.

As our train continued on our track the OSO Convention Workshop was our next stop entitled “ Doctor, Doctor Give Me the News……Is It Memberotosis?   came into sight. We chugged along making final decisions on the agenda for our workshop.  Come join us in this workshop for testing, diagnosis and prescription for  Memberotosis

Remember!    Believe, Belong and Build!      If we work diligently together we can all say, “I thought I could, I thought I could!”  Let us all continue on the track to keep Ohio State Organization the best.
MEMBERSHIP
The Gold Key Polish Points for Membership Demystified

Since there was some concern about the Gold Key Application for 2019-2020, I would like to share the rationale behind the decision to add some flexibility to the Polish Points for membership.

I believe our purpose is to help all chapters complete requirements and have a successful year. We also want to help chapters expand their knowledge and try some new strategies. We want everyone to experience everything DKG and our Ohio State Organization has to offer. If you take some time to read through the membership items, you will find that you only need to complete two of the five options that are offered to receive the Membership polish point. The idea was to offer flexibility and hopefully increase your chapter’s membership.

I hope to see all of you at our Expansion/Membership session “Doctor, Doctor Give Me the News…Is It Memberotosis?” (# 4 alternative on the list of Membership Polish Points).

Membership Chair
LEGISLATIVE
A new federal program called Fostering Youth for Independence aims to help  young adults aging out of the foster care system each year and is seeing success. Nationally, about 20,000 young people ages 18-21 age out of the Foster Care system each year. Some statistics put that number even higher at 23,000, according to a 2017 National Foster Youth Institute. However, this new program through the federal Housing and Urban Development Department which is starting up with 250 clients was deemed so successful by the HUD Secretary Ben Carson in a  CBS Interview on Monday  that he is adding another half million dollars to expand the program.

Delta Kappa Chapter, Montgomery County, has been honored with the award five times. Rho Chapter, Cuyahoga County, has won the award twice in the last five years.
