VILLAGE NEWS & NOTICES

PLANNING BOARD SURVEY RESULTS

  • The Planning Board fielded a survey in June to understand how the community thinks about issues related to commercial and residential vibrancy in the Village. The information from this survey will help inform decision making, ensuring that community interests are represented.

3RD STREET MEMORIAL PARK

  • The basketball court will be closed for two weeks starting Sunday, August 17 for resurfacing, other renovations, and rehanging of the mural.

COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

  • Recent immigration enforcement activity in our community has affected many people. OLA (Organizacion Latino Americana) of Eastern Long Island has resources for affected families and friends, as well as those who want to help and join a rapid response team.

COMMUNITY PRESERVATION FUNDING FOR GREENPORT

  • In 2016, Southold Town voters approved a referendum to use up to 20% of Community Preservation Funds for water quality projects. In all the other East End towns, these funds have been used for projects like wastewater treatment improvement, shellfish habitat restoration, improving stormwater mitigation techniques, and pollution prevention. From 2018 to 2024, Southold Town's CPF totaled 75.31 million, meaning in that time period, over 15 million could have been used for water quality improvement on the North Fork.

  • Recent state legislation requires 10% of the CPF to be used in disadvantaged communities, of which Greenport is the only one in Southold Town. In that same time period (2018-2024), that could have meant over 7.5 million dollars for projects in Greenport.

  • Please continue to speak and write to your Town Board members on this issue, and attend the joint Board Meeting of the Town and Village Boards on Tuesday, September 23 at 2pm at Southold Town Hall to discuss CPF in our community.

Planning Board Survey Says More Mixed-Use Development

Village Board Suggests Greater Greenport Zoning Changes

MONTHLY VILLAGE BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

PLANNING BOARD

  • Special Planning Board Meeting with Business Community | Monday, September 8 – 5:30-6:30pm • Little Red Schoolhouse

  • Open for Business: Chairman Hammes addressed recent comments that have suggested it is difficult to open a business in Greenport and reported that, over the past 6 months, more than 6 businesses have submitted applications to open or expand operations in the Village and have either opened, received permits, or are in the process of obtaining permits, all without Planning Board involvement or parking requirements given the Code changes implemented 2 years ago.
  • Community Housing: A joint discussion was held between the Planning Board and the Affordable & Workforce Housing Committee. Investigation into programs on Shelter Island and Southold related to Accessory Dwelling Units revealed that complexity of regulations plays a large role in the failure or success of creating greater access to affordable housing. Acknowledging favor for mixed-use development in the commercial district, the expansion of a range of affordable housing opportunities may include consideration for more multi-family housing projects.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

  • Preservation Long Island: A presentation from Tara Cubie, Director of Preservation Long Island has been rescheduled and will take place August 21st at the Village Board of Trustees meeting.
  • Historic Plaques: North Fork Welding has acquired a piece of equipment that may support creating and making available uniform plaques to commemorate historic properties.

VILLAGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

  • Upcoming Joint Meeting with Southold Town Board: Tuesday, September 23 5pm | Southold Town Hall
  • Community Housing: Diana Gordon, chair of the Affordable & Workforce Housing Committee addressed the board about turning the affordable housing discussion and commitment into action. The Village and the Town of Southold may apply to receive services, at no cost, from the Long Island Forward Housing Program for exploration and analysis of opportunities to produce affordable, multi-family housing.

  • Skate Park: Rena Wilhelm led a series of presentations regarding the Skate Park including plans for the part 1 of the renovation, the success of the National Skate Day event, and a proposal for an end of summer event to celebrate the role of the park in the community before renovations begin.

  • Groovin' through Greenport: Dances in the Park has begun and the Clerk reported that in order to ensure the businesses in the Village gain the benefits of the crowds that attend a new program has been instituted called Groovin' through Greenport. Those who dine and spend at businesses in the Village are entered into a sweepstakes to win official Dances in the Park merchandise every Monday night.

  • Visitor's Dock: There has been no visitor/courtesy dock (near the Jitney parking lot) this year. Replacement of the degraded dock would cost $75,000 with subsequent maintenance and enforcement costs that would need to be funded at Village taxpayer expense. Small boat slips are available at the marina for half- or full-day stays at the cost of $2 per foot. The board is reviewing options for replacement of the dock and possible relocation within the marina.
