A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
|
|
Hiking to the San Bernardino Initial Point was not my idea of having fun; however, it was exhilarating and I am glad I did it. Fifteen surveyors from the San Bernardino/Riverside and Orange County Chapters met at the trailhead early on Saturday morning to make the 8-mile trek to the top.
Along the way are majestic views and beautiful scenery. It was a great time of the year to go with temperatures being just right accented with a blue sky. The trail was heavily traveled that day and conversations with other travelers was a welcome rest. One group was a Boy Scout troop. Bill Hofferber and I were able to explain the Initial Point. Bill went on to tell a receptive Scout leader that CLSA was willing to help them in getting a Surveying Merit Badge.
At the Initial Point, those of us there for the first time placed our tag in one of the timber that are mixed in with the rock formation. During our rest, several hikers stopped to get a quick explanation from our group of what this monument represented and its importance.
I am sure that when Washington set the Initial Point in 1852, he did not envision its prominence to a developing society in modern times. Just like Washington, who set the Initial Point, you have an opportunity to contribute to your community by participating in the Geoid 2018 benchmark initiative before the August deadline.
At this time we have roughly 40% accounted for.
CLICK HERE to see the number of benchmarks by county that have been accounted for and those that have not. If you haven’t claimed one please do so. Be a part of this important endeavor. Who knows, maybe 150 years from now surveyors will be explaining on a hike what we did for the 2018 model.
Ron Nelms
CLSA President

Join NCEES at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess for the 97th annual meeting. The Council will meet to decide key licensure issues and take time to explore the sights, sounds, and tastes of Scottsdale.
The agenda offers opportunities to vote on the issues and elect new officers at the business sessions, take part in the technical workshops and forums, and network and share ideas with delegates and guests at social events.

The President’s special committee E-Chapters authorized by the CLSA Board of Directors is getting underway with their task to research the feasibility of creating CLSA Electronic Chapters. The purpose is to increase membership and give a voice to surveyors in the regions of California where there are voids in the current CLSA chapter network or have travel restrictions that inhibit face to face meeting attendance. The goals of the committee will be both technical and political necessary to develop a recommendation to the Board of Directors.
The Committee is currently working with BPELSG to develop a current GIS distribution of California licensed Land Surveyors and registered pre-1982 Civil Engineers throughout California to review potential regions that may benefit from an e-chapter, if any. The preliminary GIS hotspot map shows a preview of the 2018 data obtained from BPELSG keeping in mind there are 200-300 post office box addresses that cannot be georeferenced. The Committee is designed to operate as an e-chapter with discussion of various topics and tasks through an online forum. The final goal of the Committee is to prepare a thorough report to the Board of Directors including the pros and cons of the Committee’s activities using the online communication forum. All comments and suggestions are welcome and can be forwarded to the CLSA Central Office.

GPS ON BENCHMARKS INITIATIVE 2018
|
The CLSA is proud to support the National Geodetic Survey's "2018 - GPS on Benchmarks" program. The program is simply a crowdsourcing call to citizen surveyors to collect GPS observations on NGS NAVD88 benchmarks and share these data with NGS. These collected data will be used to first to create the next hybrid- Geoid 18, then be the basis for the future conversion tool(s) to the upcoming 2022 datum and gravimetric geoid. This effort is an essential component in tying recent GPS observations and solutions to the current national vertical datum - NAVD88.
CLSA recognizes the importance of this program, is tracking progress and actively mobilizing our community. With your help, we can contribute to better heights for years to come. Our goal is to densify the data, hopefully avoid NGS extrapolating geoid data over very large distances uncontrolled. We can git-R-Done!
For a more detailed overview see:

CLSA is making every effort to avoid duplication of observations and track our success.
