A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Any organization that wishes to promote itself needs to include networking. A few days ago I was pleased to see an officer from one Chapter reach out to an officer of another Chapter on ideas of how to accept payment. Good advice was given as to what they found worked for their Chapter. Our Chapters have been networking with each other by sharing ideas of speakers, technology, and membership drives.

In a collaborative effort, the Bakersfield Chapter is going to mark the location of 1,000 flags on Memorial Day weekend for our 5th year in a row. My understanding is that the Desert Chapter continues to do the same surrounding Veteran’s Day. Other Chapters have been involved with the Trig Star Program. The Scouting Merit Badge Committee is not only working with the Boy Scouts but also investigating the possibilities of incorporating a Merit Badge in Girl Scouts. By doing this, these Chapters are using their talents to reach into their communities and promote our profession.

Recently, NSPS President Kim H. Leavitt reached out to CLSA asking for support to help man a booth as an exhibitor at the national convention of American School Counselors Association to be held in Las Angeles, July 14-16, 2018. They are looking to find two "Augmented Reality Sandboxes" to be used as tools to explain surveying and mapping. Kim went on to say “There will be about 3,000 (career) counselors from all over the US. It is a guarantee that the sandboxes will attract the counselors. NSPS will supply brochures and trinkets to be handed out along with some signage.” This was forwarded to the Los Angeles Chapter and they have accepted the charge.

An effort by CLSA to occupy benchmarks in California for the 2018 Geoid model before August is under way. Each Chapter is being asked to identify these benchmarks in their area and make plans to occupy. CLSA has set up a central location for you to send the data.

All the above is evidence that the Chapters within CLSA are networking -- be it cross-chapter recommendations concerning technology and/or methodology, contributing to our community, or working with other organizations to promote and enhance our Membership, Association, and Profession.

CLSA AFFILIATES WITH THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR GEODETIC SURVEYING
On April 28, 2018, the California Land Surveyors Association became an affiliate member of the American Association for Geodetic Surveying (AAGS). Affiliating with AAGS costs our state society nothing and provides our members with additional benefits if they wish to become AAGS regular or affiliate members. Currently, the Alaska Section of the ACSM, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Virginia have affiliated with AAGS. More state societies will hopefully become affiliates of AAGS following their upcoming board meetings. Listed below are some of the reasons why you might wish to become affiliate members of AAGS.

The AAGS vision is to lead the community of geodetic surveying, surveying, and land information data-users through the 21 st century. In this vein, AAGS is working to develop educational programs through presentations, seminars, workshops, and online videos related to the topics of geodetic surveying. In the future, AAGS will be providing a Geodetic Certification program, which will be available online. All CLSA members who become affiliate members of AAGS will get the instructional videos and Geodetic Certification materials at regular AAGS member prices. You can also join AAGS as regular members.

Full membership will provide you with access to Surveying and Land Information Science , which is the only journal that routinely accepts – or even accepts at all – papers on boundary issues and is the profession’s only refereed journal as well as voting privileges in AAGS. SaLIS has published four boundary-related papers in its last five publications with others such as riparian delineation in Texas awaiting publication. As GNSS, laser scanning, and other new technologies come into common use, AAGS will be at the forefront in developing the necessary education for proper use of these technologies. It will also provide the necessary education to understand the impact of the different realizations of NAD 83, and how to successfully access the upcoming three-dimensional terrestrial reference frame being developed by the National Geodetic Survey for release in 2022.
OREGON TECH GEOMATICS CLUB TAKES FIRST PLACE IN NATIONAL SURVEYING COMPETITION
The Oregon Tech Geomatics Club, led by senior student Katie Singleton of Portland, Oregon, took first place in the annual National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Surveying Competition, Baccalaureate Division that concluded Feb. 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The theme of the competition this year was “Surveying Service.” The competition consisted of a field exercise and presentation. The field exercise was done on 80 acres of BLM land that was marked off into individual sites upon which the only reference marker was the center point of what was to be a one-acre square parcel. Each team was instructed to lay out a one-acre square parcel and conduct a topographic survey of the parcel. A plat was to be drawn showing the boundary lines/monuments and the contours of the parcel. On Monday the teams moved inside to do their computations and create a boundary/topographic plat. Teams were required to simulate a surveying project in a developing country. The students were limited to very basic and fundamental equipment that would be used in Third World situations including magnetic compasses, steel tapes and automatic levels. No modern technology tools such as GPS or Total Stations were allowed.
Faculty adviser and Geomatics professor, Mason Marker, attended the conference with the students. “The students really excelled in their professionalism, their technical skills and their enthusiasm for getting the job done and done well,” he said.

Along with Katie, the team consisted of Mosier Locke of Dallas, Oregon; Saul Preciado of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Riley Edwards of Chehalis, Washington; Jon Hennon of La Ca ñada Flintridge, California; and Marcus Helm of Galt, California.

The NSPS Student Competition is an annual event open to all two- and four-year Geomatics and Surveying degree programs across the country. 11 teams from four-year baccalaureate programs competed this year.
