Welcome to Katie, Our newest member of the Body Yoga family!
Katie teaches the 9am Sunday Vinyasa class and we asked her to  share a little more about herself...
"I began classical ballet at the age of 5 under the tuition of Kathleen Gorham.  Leaving school in my teens to pursue fulltime training I began working in the Professional Entertainment Industry both on stage and screen.  I began a regular yoga practice after a reoccurring ankle injury which saw me leave the stage and venture into a new world of small business.  I opened UE agency in 1999 which specializes in Artist Management & Entertainment Consultancy.
My motivation to attend yoga was initially to replace the physical aspect of performing every day.  Athletes have a habit of telling their bodies what to do, pushing through pain barriers and injury.  For the first-time (with the practice of Yoga)  I was listening to my body.
After a few years of training in various styles, and attending numerous workshops I began to feel the benefits of the practice not only physically but mentally and spiritually.   This  began a domino effect of lifestyle changes for the better.  The first being to slow down.  I recently completed my 200 hrs teacher training with Power Living and I hope to share this knowledge and my experience to help others to bring awareness of our connection to all things and to bring stillness into our lives".
You can experience Katie's classes every Sunday at 9am!
All About Iyengar Yoga....
Mary is our very passionate Iyengar teacher here at Body Yoga and we asked her to share a little more about Iyengar yoga and what she loves about it...
Iyengar yoga is named after BKS Iyengar (1918-2014), considered one of the foremost exponents of yoga to bring yoga to the west. Iyengar dedicated most of his life to the practice and explorations of yoga, teaching from the age of 18 up to his passing at age 95. He was known to be an intense and rigorous teacher who walked the walk – his poses were impeccable even in his later years and after recovery from a road accident. His book  Light on Yoga  is widely known as the ‘bible of yoga.’
Becoming an Iyengar yoga teacher is a rigorous process. Prospective teachers are required to have regularly trained with a qualified teacher for a minimum of 3 consecutive years prior to consideration in a two-year teacher training program of theory and observed practice. To maintain teaching qualification, teachers must continue regular training and development each year with a senior yoga teacher and link with the Iyengar institute in Pune India. Iyengar maintained that teaching is understood from inside out and the method of teaching reflects this. Alignment is a cornerstone of the practice of Iyengar yoga and requires deliberate positioning of the body and its various parts, such as limbs and joints.  Correct positioning and alignment protects the joints, muscles, organs and tissues of the body, and simply makes sense. Iyengar yoga class involves being given continuous instruction on how to align the body in the hatha yoga poses with the occasional physical adjustment. It is typically a gradual process whereby repetition and self-awareness in action allows for improved flexibility, strength and balance.
“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.”  - B.K.S. Iyengar
Another core element of Iyengar yoga is the use of props. Iyengar believed that anyone could benefit from yoga, and he incorporated aids or props, such as blocks, belts and ropes for those who needed them. Areas of the body are supported allowing for certain muscles to be engaged and focussed on, thus avoiding vulnerability and strain to weaker areas. Props allow a pose to be achieved in a modified form and to reap the benefits of the pose, as opposed to performing it incorrectly or avoiding it all together.
The photo below shows a student in my class (age 80 years) in rope-supported downward dog pose (ardho mukha svanasana). The ropes support the top of the thighs and the lift the hips. This allows her to focus on the engagement of the quadriceps muscles, supported with the pressure of the feet into the wall. These actions bring release to the hamstring muscles (antagonist muscles to the quadriceps) and allow extension to the spine. The outer edges of the hands are placed on the bolster with straighten arms to enable openness in the chest.
“Activity and passivity must go together in asanas (poses).”  - B.K.S. Iyengar
The benefits of Iyengar yoga were evident in Iyengar’s life. At age 64 years he had his pulmonary function measured and was found to have the lung function of a 24-year-old. He lead a long and active life into his 90’s and continued to teach and travel around the world. Moreover, scientific studies have confirmed the benefits of Iyengar yoga, in alleviating chronic lower back pain, treating depression and anxiety, the symptoms of osteoarthritis, and alleviating pediatric chronic pain (yogainternational.com). Iyengar yoga has bought a systemised approach to the ancient practice of yoga that is both beneficial and accessible to people at various stages of ability.
“Regular practice of yoga can help you face the turmoil of life with steadiness and stability.”  - B.K.S. Iyengar
You can join Mary for her Iyengar classes on Mondays at 9:3am and Thursdays at 9:30am.
Our first Beginners Yoga Course!
Emma recently facilitated our first ever Beginners Course and she shares below her experience. It's amazing how so much can change over a relatively short amount of time...
"I recently took 8 students through a 5 week beginners course, exploring the basics of yoga, 7 of the 8 students who attended had never been on a mat. From the first week to the 5th week the shifts, changes and the body awareness created within each student was extraordinary. Each week they would share with me how they felt, what they noticed after class and how they would feel over the next few days after having attended the class.
When I attended my first yoga class, something inside me lit up, I didn’t quite understand this like I do today however I was able to witness this with these students and they were able to share by our final week not only the changes in their physical body but mostly how much everything in their life had changed. This is a big statement I know however having had a much deeper connection to their physical and internal body and the mind and breathe, the disconnected world they felt they once lived in will never be the same because now they know! They know how to be inside, inside their body, connected to their breath and the most beautiful and truly heart felt magical feeling is that I was able to witness this with them. I am moved beyond words by these beautiful students who took me back to basics and allowed me to nurture them through these 5 weeks and to ALL my students who continually teach me – they teach me to love, to grow and the continued importance of this wonderful ancient practice we are blessed to have in our lives – called YOGA".
