Some patients with breast implants have reported a range of systemic symptoms which they refer to and which has become known as Breast Implant Illness. Among symptoms reported include fatigue, chronic pain, rash, anxiety, muscle pain, recurring infections, swollen lymph nodes and/ or other typically generalized and non-disease-specific symptoms. While patients with breast implants are not immune to experiencing such symptoms, the current body of scientific evidence does NOT support claims that breast implants actually cause illness. Most of us are exposed to silica and/or silicone-containing products almost daily, with no known effect. Regardless, Health Canada, in partnership with the FDA, industry, medical and plastic surgery societies, and researchers are working to better characterize these anecdotal observations in attempt to determine the extent to which symptoms are correlated to having breast implants.
Within the last decade of practice, I have removed only two sets of silicone breast implants in patients who state to have experienced some or more of the above symptoms and who requested that their implants be taken out. In one patient, removal of the implants seemed to have helped alleviate some of her symptoms, while in the other, removal of the implants made no difference.
