On the Bookshelf

The HRC is home to the largest Holocaust literature collection in New Jersey, with over 8,000 printed books. It doesn’t stop there; we also have an oral history collection of more than 210 testimonies of survivors, rescuers, and liberators who relocated to the New Jersey/New York area following the war. Each month, we will highlight a newer book to the collection to share with the community.

Chocolate the Taste of Freedom

Chocolate the Taste of Freedom is written by Holocaust survivor Maud Peper Dahme. Of the 1.6 million Jewish children who lived in Europe before WWII, only 100,000 survived the Holocaust. Most were hidden children. Dahme was one of those hidden children, hidden from the Nazis by righteous Gentiles in the Netherlands. Chocolate, the Taste of Freedom chronicles not only the wartime adventures of Dahme but also her post-war experiences -- reunion with parents, immigration, U.S. schools, marriage, and Holocaust education advocacy.

Chocolate the Taste of Freedom is part of our classroom book set collection. Classroom book sets are available for a four-week loan period free of charge to the Council on Global Education and Citizenship members. Each set contains 30 copies of the book, lesson plans, and additional resources and reading where available.
