Staff & Student Spotlight
Ms. Clay began her career at The Pathway School in September 2016 in the role of Personal Care Assistant.  She enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with the student assigned and with the team of caring professionals with whom she worked. Prior to joining the Admissions Department in October of 2018, she also worked as an Instructional Coordinator, supporting the needs of the lead teacher and the other students in the classroom.

Her compassion for students is evident in her interactions and her positive attitude is infectious. As she advanced her educational career and worked towards her Master’s Degree, Ms. Clay sought an opportunity to expand her skill-set in a different part of the organization. As the Admissions Associate, she is responsible for the coordination of important steps in the admissions process, she is enthusiastic about accuracy, professionalism and collaboration. She still enjoys the opportunity to interact with the students and their families, and makes a point to visit the campus throughout the week.

Thank you, Ms. Clay for your warmth, good humor and dedication!

David’s teachers report he is a pleasure to have in the classroom and is described as the consummate gentleman. Often David is the last person in the room during transitions, and that is because he is usually holding the door open for everyone! He understands what it means to be kind and encourages others to treat everyone with respect. David will assist his teachers with taking attendance, changing the class calendar and ensuring the class schedule is up to date. David is not only a golfer, but participates in a variety of sports with Special Olympics, including swimming, skiing and horseback riding. David was selected as one of six students to represent Pathway in the upcoming FORE! the kids golf outing. His family and the entire Pathway community are so proud of David’s accomplishments.

Elmwood Park Zoo Offers New Program to Pathway

On February 25 th Elmwood Park Zoo on Wheels started the first of a 16 week series by bringing a variety of turtles to the school. In following weeks, the zoo offered lessons on mammals, birds, invertebrates (scorpions/tarantulas) and amphibians. Along with lessons at Pathway, two field trips are planned for the students to visit the zoo in May.

Elmwood Park Zoo received a 3 year grant to work with Pathway and other local schools to offer education about animals in our world. Zoo Director of Education, Laura Houston, collaborated with Pathway principal, Nina Prestia, to develop a curriculum that could be enjoyed by students of all ages.

In addition to learning about animals, their habitats and life cycles, students gain an appreciation for their role as conservationists and the ways humans and animals can support each other. Students are also experiencing diverse job opportunities, which may align with their career interests. Pathway and Elmwood Park Zoo look forward to many years of learning together.

Literacy Week Celebration

Once again The Pathway School participated in “Read Across America” by inviting donors, community leaders, elected officials, board members and new friends to celebrate with us by visiting and reading to our students. During the week of March 4 th to March 8 th sixteen community volunteers captivated students in various grades by reading stories and sharing information about their professions.

Our celebrity guests included former Philadelphia Flyers’ player and two time Stanley Cup Champion, Bill Clement and Homewood Suites mascot, “Lewis the Duck”. Mr. Clement read from his autobiography, EveryDay Leadership followed by an exciting game of floor hockey with the students.

Lewis mesmerized the kindergarten class with his larger than life presence and warm hugs. It was a great week all around and we are grateful for our community volunteers for spending time and getting to know our amazing students.
United States Congresswoman Madeleine Dean Visits Pathway Students

On Friday, March 22 nd Congresswoman Madeleine Dean, who serves in the House of Representatives representing the 4 th District of Pennsylvania, came to The Pathway School to meet with a group of our high school students. The students had the opportunity to meet and greet with Congresswoman Dean both sharing with her what they like most about Pathway and learning what the congresswoman liked about her own high school experience. She shared highlights of her work, first as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and continued with insights as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The students asked thoughtful questions about what it means to be a member of congress and what legislation the congresswoman has helped to pass. Congresswoman Dean serves on two committees, including the House Judiciary Committee and the House Financial Services Committee. Congresswoman Dean and her Communications Director, Matt Bieber enjoyed meeting with our wonderful students and our students will pay closer attention to D.C. politics now that they have friends in Washington!

Pump It Up Pathway

The weather was just right for the 2 nd Annual Pump It Up Pathway 5k Run/1 Mile Fun Run held on April 6 th at Norristown Farm Park.

There were 40 runners racing to the finish line in the 5k and 51 participants walked the mile course. Representatives from the Physical Therapy and Wellness Institute offered stretching instructions and the children were delighted by Mimi the face painter and Connie the balloon artist. A big “thank you” goes out to all of the volunteers as well as Carrie Bergstresser and Ranger Walt from Norristown Farm Park for their valuable assistance that day.

We are grateful for the following sponsors who supported the event and helped us reach our financial goal: C. Raymond Davis, Tompkins VIST Bank, Jory & Kim Barrad, The Robertson Family, Lintons Food Service, Long’s Heating & Cooling, Berg Construction, RRR Contractors, Elms Construction Group and Buffalo Roots Realty.

April Talent Show

On April 12 th Pathway students from all ages showed off their special expertise at the school talent show.

A variety of acts were performed including singing, instrumentals, comedy and dance routines. The students performed to a full house of their teachers, family members and friends. The cheers and applause made everyone proud of the courage each performer brought to the stage.

Special thanks to our speech department for helping the students select their acts and working with them on rehearsals leading up to the event. It was a great way to end the school week and begin spring break.
