MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR

If you drive by the church next week and notice scaffolding and workers on the roof—don’t worry! All is well. In fact, it’s a sign of important and thoughtful progress. After months of assessment, comparison, and discernment, the Vestry has unanimously approved the replacement of our church roof.

This is no small project. Our dedicated property manager, Glenn, has put in countless hours researching and meeting with contractors, discussing progress and answering the vestry's questions for months, and at our May vestry meeting, he helped the vestry make a well-informed, responsible decision to replace the roof. We are deeply grateful for his diligence and care.

While a new roof might not seem especially spiritual, it is, in fact, a clear act of stewardship. Replacing the roof is part of our ongoing commitment to caring for this sacred space—a commitment we all share as stewards of the buildings and grounds entrusted to us. It’s a practical project with a spiritual heart: preserving the place where we gather, worship, and serve.

Fittingly, we will also celebrate Rogation Sunday this week—a tradition that invites us to pray for the land, the harvest, and all who work with their hands to tend and build. As part of that celebration, I invite you to bring a plant from home to be blessed before planting. It’s a small act, but one that reminds us that renewal, growth, and faithfulness often begin with simple things: a seed in the soil, a shingle on a roof, a prayer shared in community.

As we enter Memorial Day weekend, we also take time to remember and give thanks for those who gave their lives in service to our country. May their memory be a blessing, and may we strive to be people of peace and hope in their honor.

SOMD Regional Spaghetti Dinner

Last week’s Southern Maryland Regional Spaghetti Dinner brought together members from across our region for a delicious meal and meaningful conversation. It was a joy to share food, stories, and connection with one another.

Senior Singles

The attendees of the May Senior Singles meeting enjoyed a delicious lunch on a lovely spring day. Pictured at Vaughan Cheese are (l-r) Fern, Pat, Pam, Evelyn, Bucky, Ronnie, Mary Ann, and Gwen. Newcomers and regulars look forward to our next meeting on Wednesday, June 4. Come join us!

The Crafting/Needlework Group will be meeting on Zoom, Thursday, May 29th, from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Please join us to work on your projects or just to talk. Share with your friends who might be interested. The Men's Breakfast is always the first Saturday of every month at 9:00 am at Traders Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach. Jim Thrift, our convener, will be in attendance setting up the room before 9:00. The breakfasts are for all Christian men for fellowship and fun. We discuss most everything except religion. Plan to attend and bring a friend as all are welcome, especially newcomers. If you attend you'll have fun, if you don't, we'll talk about you.

The Calvert Peace Project is pleased to offer our county’s youth the Peaceful Youth Leaders Summer of Service. This week-long experience, featuring volunteer opportunities enriched by lessons and reflection, is designed for youth ages 12 through 18 and will take place from July 14 = 19, 2025, with each day held at a different community organization location.
