Headmaster Letter

Dear North Phoenix Prep Families,

Can you believe that it's the final week of the 3rd Quarter? It's a cliche, I know, but time really does seem to fly faster and faster as the years go by. In fact, Shelly and I were just recently reflecting on this reality as we paged through old pictures of our toddlers, Edmund and Sophia. It seems like they were infants only yesterday! As many of you have already told us, they'll be teenagers before we know it.

Time does, indeed, tend to pass more quickly than we realize. That's why our team has been proactively planning to finish the school year strong & pivot into the 2019-2020 school year with purpose. In January, I formed a Steering Committee of faculty members to join me in the work of cultural improvement at NPX. After careful deliberation and thoughtful conversation, and with the input of students, the committee has decided to focus our collective energies on creating an even more special environment at North Phoenix Prep.

What does it mean to create a "special environment"? Think about what happens when you walk into a museum, or a cathedral, or a football stadium, or a library. Each of those unique spaces, and others like them, communicate a consistent atmosphere and sense of behavioral expectations. From the moment we walk into a museum, we know that we ought to meander, to pause before artifacts and consider them, to move slowly, and to speak softly. Football stadium behavior is as inappropriate in a museum as museum behavior is in a football stadium. Our work over the next several months, then, will be to establish a clear threshold between the interior of our campus and the environment outside, one that clearly communicates, among other things, a vision of dignified deportment and decorum.

The implications of this improvement project are many. There are, for example, several aesthetic improvements that we need to make in our courtyard, Prep entry, and hallways. These will require time and resources to complete, however. So we've decided to start the 4th quarter with a project that's limited in scope and that should be fairly straightforward to implement: a simple morning entry routine at the Prep entrance. The main purpose of the entry routine is to raise student awareness that they are entering a shared academic space that belongs to the whole community, one within which we share a particular way of being. To help us iron out the details of this routine, a focus group of students from a wide range of grade levels have already provided valuable input, and we will be administering a brief survey to all students tomorrow to gather even more.

I am eager to engage our whole community of faculty, students, and families in this improvement project, so please do reach out to me directly with any questions or ideas that you may have. I believe that we are building something truly special here at North Phoenix Prep, and I am excited about taking that to the next level in the 4th Quarter!

With Devotion,

Headmaster Weinhold
