This past month we've been busy with a lot of upcoming projects for 2019. We're excited as we continue to grow and see how God provides over and over again. Thank you for being a part of our mission.
What Have We Been Up To?
Chasing the Chill Away

We kicked off the year by hosting the annual Chase the Chill event where volunteers knit hundreds of items to keep those in need warm. This year the group Styx & String and other independent knitters hand-knit 700 scarves, hats, gloves, slippers and socks to be donated
to community members in need. The handmade items were hung in public for easy access and distribution.

Under Construction

To start out the new year, we want to show our volunteers how much we value and appreciate them by creating a new volunteer break room at our Food for Families program! We are so thankful to have over 500 volunteers every month. While this barely scrapes the surface of thanking them for all they do, we hope the space is a place where they store belongings, lunches and can take a break. We can't serve those in our community without our generous volunteers. We are still looking for certain items to be donated to finish off the space, so if you are willing or know of anyone with an extra microwave , coffee pot , or fridge (two feet in width) or mini fridge , we would love to put them to good use. Please be on the lookout as we continue this project.

Faces of Park View
This year we want to showcase all the wonderful people that come through our doors and the amazing stories they carry with them. Whether its a volunteer, neighbor, staff member or partner, we hope you enjoy meeting the faces of Park View!
Meet John Booth

John, or "J" as most know him by, is no new face around here! J began coming to the Food for Families pantry from the very beginning in the 1970s. He first heard about Park View Community Mission through a neighbor and started coming to get groceries for his parents and himself.

J says, "Park View means a lot to me. It helps out me and my roommate so much." While he comes to the Food for Families pantry a lot, his favorite event is the Wednesday night meals at our Park View Cafe. "I just love to fellowship with the people around my table," says J, "It's how I get to know them better by sharing a dinner with them."
Thank You!

Thank you to the following groups who have served at the Park View Cafe and helped us to create a culture of love and hope for people like J.

Leesville United Methodist Church (UMC), Lane UMC, Timberlake UMC, Amelon UMC, Fort Hill UMC and Bedrock Church Lynchburg.

And we are looking forward to the following groups coming to serve with us this coming month: Heritage Baptist Church, Meade UMC, and West Lynchburg Baptist Church.

Nakesha's Story
Nakesha recently shared her powerful testimony of progress at the Poverty to Progress event. It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to share your journey. When you have 10 minutes to spare, please watch her video. This is the power of relationships, the power of providing help, healing and hope.

"But the truth is, poverty is not selective. It could happen to anyone at any time," says Nakesha, "You want to know what poor looks like? Here I am." Check out her story here

A Need for Home Essentials

Did you know that a number of the people we serve, come from generational poverty? This means that families, for generations, have been living in patterns and habits that have kept them in a cycle of poverty. This may simply be because they have not had others in their life to speak truth and hope and potential into them. Many have never been taught basic home essential education from family or friends. Some people don't know how to do laundry or cook a healthy meal. We want to change that. We will soon be expanding our home essentials program which will includes classes on personal finance, house cleaning, laundry, healthy cooking and first aid. If you have a passion for any of these areas and would like to see how you can be involved email here or call 434-851-2239!
We Need Your Helping Hands

We still need help with our clothing ministry! Clothing is one of the biggest needs for our neighbors. We hope to be able to continue providing clothes to our neighbors in need but we can't keep up with it without your help. Our vision is to create a boutique where people can come to pick out free clothes for themselves and their children or find an outfit for a job interview. We can't make this happen without your help! Please consider how you can come to Park View on a Wednesday or Thursday and help us to sort and organize clothing and fulfill this vision. Email here to find out more or see how you can plug in!

A Warm Cup of Coffee

A cup of coffee is powerful thing here at Park View. Why?...We began serving coffee about a year ago to our neighbors while they wait to shop at our food distribution. We have found that not only does it provide warmth to those in need of it, but it provides an opportunity for our neighbors and volunteers to gather in community; where conversations can take place, stories are shared, and hope is provided. We often receive coffee in our food donations but have been running low. Would you consider donating ground coffee?
