📓 What's Changing?
Starting in late 2025 and continuing into 2027, new federal rules will impact:
- How people qualify for Medicaid
- How often renewals are required
These changes will happen gradually. Some Medicaid programs will be more affected than others, and it's important to know which one applies to your family member.
⚠️ Who Could Be Affected?
In New Jersey, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) often qualify for Medicaid in the following ways:
- Through SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
- Supports Program: for those living at home or independently
- Community Care Program (CCP): for those receiving 24/7 or residential services
Keeping Medicaid active is essential to continue receiving services.
💡 Why This Matters
Medicaid helps cover many vital supports, including:
- Day programs and job coaching
- In-home and community-based services
- Medical equipment and therapy
- Transportation
- Residential care and staffing
Without Medicaid, these services can be delayed or discontinued. Staying current is key.
✅ How Your Support Coordinator Can Help
While SCs cannot complete or submit Medicaid paperwork, they can help by:
- Informing you of your loved one's Medicaid category
- Referring you to benefits professionals and legal aid if needed
- Connecting you with a Supports Broker and other community resources
They're your partner in staying informed and ready.
📨 What You Can Do Now
To avoid service interruptions:
-
Open and read any mail from NJ FamilyCare or Social Security
- Respond to all renewal letters and requests quickly
- Keep documents like income and address proof up to date
- Make copies of anything you submit
