Volvo has a three pillar approach to decarbonizing heavy-duty emissions: battery electric drivetrains, fuel cell electric drivetrains and hydrogen ICE drivetrains. Volvo’s target is to be fossil free by 2040.

US DOE $7.5M to Support Community Planning for Waste-to-Energy/Fuels
|
|
The US DOE will issue a $7.5M FOA in December to fund multiple communities to develop feasibility studies to divert organic waste from landfills into systems to convert it to energy or fuels.

GM has announced that they have formed a partnership with Niron Magentics, a company that claims to be able to make powerful permanent magnet motors using Iron Nitride, a plentiful domestic mineral.

|
|
DOE and EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov website helps consumers choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets their needs. In addition to providing the Fuel Economy Guide, FuelEconomy.gov includes lists of the Top Ten 2024 Fuel Sippers and the 2024 Most Efficient Vehicles by EPA Size Class. The website features updated fuel economy data for new and used passenger vehicles dating back to 1984, allows side-by-side vehicle comparisons, and offers tips to help consumers save money and fuel. The website also includes NHTSA safety ratings, tax incentives, and a variety of tools to help consumers reduce costs and make informed decisions about fuel economy.

The Energy Information Administration’s “Winter Fuels Outlook for 2023-24 shows that an average US home heated with electricity will pay 77% more this winter than homes heated with natural gas.

DOE Funds $18M "SPARKS" Program

The US DOE will provide $18M to fund a new program, “Spurring Projects to Advance energy Research and Knowledge Swiftly” (SPARKS). The goals is to fund innovative energy concepts that could foster the adoption of clean energy platforms, increase energy independence and improve the country’s economic and energy security

Major Carbon Sequestration Project

|
Carbon TerraVault has signed an agreement with NLC Energy to sequester 150,000 metric tons per year of CO2 at the waste-to-energy site they will build in Elk Hills [20 miles west of Bakersfield].

EVs Driven Less Than ICEs
|
|
A study of nearly 25 million odometer readings of used cars and SUVs has shown that, on average, EVs are driven 4,500 fewer miles than ICEs, resulting in less VMT reductions than previously modeled.
