EPA Upcoming Funding Opportunity
In February, EPA will release a call for applications for its Clean Ports Program. This program will make $2.6 billion available for the zero-emissions equipment and infrastructure and $300 million available for climate and air quality planning projects.

Micro-Grant Opportunity
The National Clean Cities Program is opening another “Jumpstart” funding round with applications due February 9. Jumpstart funds are available for projects that are not on the list of required deliverables for Clean Cities Coalitions. SMUD Wins REACH 2.0 Award
SMUD received the highest score on the CEC REACH 2.0 solicitation and has a proposed award of $5M. The purpose of the REACH 2.0 solicitation is to demonstrate replicable and scalable business and technology models for large-scale deployment of EV charging infrastructure capable of maximizing access and EV travel for Multi-Family Housing residents.
DOE Foreign Content May Cut EV Credits
The DOE has issued proposed guidance on the foreign battery content in EVs that could cut the federal tax credits for some EVs. Beginning 1/1/24, if key battery components are from a “foreign entity of concern” they will be ineligible. Beginning in 2025, this restriction will apply to the critical mining, processing and recycling of battery minerals.

Average DCFC Session is 42 Minutes
An analysis of data collected from a study of electric vehicle (EV) owners shows fast charging statistics over a three-year period from June 30, 2020, to June 30, 2023, and includes a total of about 2.4 million sessions. The average length of time for a paid fast charging session was 42 minutes, consuming an average of 22 kWh of energy. Free fast charging sessions nearly doubled those numbers at 1 hour and 18 minutes and 42 kWh of electricity consumed.

DOD $3.2M Battery Graphite Award
The Department of Defense (DOD) has awarded South Star Battery Metals a $3.2M grant to develop a mine-to-CSPG (Coated Speroized Purified Graphote) process that will enable the construction of a facility to produce lithium-ion battery anodes.

A combination of decreased raw material prices and decreased demand has led to a 14% price drop year-over-year in battery prices setting a record low $139/kWh.

A recent survey by “Autolist” has shown that enthusiasm for electric pickup trucks is waning for all but a currently hypothetical Toyota Tacoma EV.

EVs & PHEVs Have Lower Reliability
A recent survey done by “Consumer Reports” indicates that EVs have 70% more problems than ICEs and PHEVs have 146% more problems, placing EVs and PHEVs in the Consumer Reports’s “Least-Reliable” category.

Car Dealers Ask Biden to Slow EV Mandates
3,882 auto dealers across the US have penned a letter to President Biden asking that he slow the government’s EV mandates, stating that enthusiasm for EVs has stalled and EVs are stacking up on dealer lots.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will take a Boeing Orbital Vehicle into orbit on December 10 to demonstrate technologies for the U.S. Space Force.

Renewable Fuel Pathway Applications
The Marathon Fuels/Neste Joint Partnership Refinery in Martinez has submitted six renewable diesel pathway applications: Soybean Oil (CI-62.93), Canola Oil (CI-56.54), Corn Oil (CI-35.24), UCO (CI-29.22), Animal Fat ( Two applications: CI-37.14 & 46.40). The Artesia Renewable Diesel Company in New Mexico has submitted three renewable diesel pathway applications: Soybean Oil (CI-57.67), Corn Oil (CI-30.05), Tallow (CI-34.05).
