Low-No Federal Transportation Grant
FTA-2023-002-TPM-LWNO, FTA-2023-003-TPM-BUS
  • $1.7B ($1.2B Low or No Emission Grants; $470M Bus & Bus Facility Grants)
  • Transition the nation’s transit fleet to the lowest polluting and most energy efficient transit vehicles
  • Grant Applications due by 4/13/23

  • Grants support the tech testing and validation
  • Grid related technologies (energy efficiency, demand response, storage, net zero buildings)
  • Sustainability including CO2 capture and decarbonizing

EPA EJ Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program
  • Projects that address environmental and public health issues within an affected community;
  • Assist recipients building partnerships to address environmental and public health concerns;
  •  $25,000,000 for up to 50 awards to Community Based Organizations (CBOs) proposing projects for up to $500,000 each. 
  • $5,000,000 for up to 33 awards to qualifying small CBOs with 5 or fewer full-time employees proposing projects for up to $150,000 each;
  • Applications due April 10.

EPA Environmental Justice Government-to-Government (EJG2G) Program
  • Projects that transform under-served communities into healthy, thriving communities;
  • Funding for governmental and tribal entities;
  • Support activities that lead to measurable environmental or public health results in disproportionately burdened communities;
  • $20,000,000 for up to 20 awards for States partnering with Community Based Organizations (CBOs);
  • $20,000,000 for up to 20 awards for tribal governments partnering with CBOs;
  • $20,000,000 for up to 20 awards for local governments partnering with CBOs;
  • $10,000,000 for up to 10 awards for U.S. Territories, Freely Associated States, Puerto Rico, and tribes in remote areas;
  • Applications are due April 10.

EPA's Environmental Justice Small Grants Program
  • Eligible applicants are limited to federally recognized tribal governments;
  • Help communities understand and address exposure to multiple environmental harms and risks;
  • $1.6 million for up 16 to 20 grants of up to $100,000 each;
  • Applications are due by May 20

Nikola Announces West Sacramento Hydrogen Station
Nikola has announced plans to build their next hydrogen station in West Sacramento, as they build out their “HYLA” brand stations across a 60-station network by 2026.

Ford Lightning Production Stopped
A Lightning suffered a battery fire in a pre-delivery yard, prompting Ford to begin an analysis to identify the cause. No recall has been initiated and Lightnings that have been delivered and that are available on dealer lots are not yet affected. Ford engineers are zeroing in on the potential cause, possibly related to the battery production process. Once properly diagnosed, a recall may be issued.

Ford Sells Rivian Stock
Ford has sold off most of its Rivian stock after taking a $7.3B write down of the stock value on their books. Rivian is struggling to become profitable and recently laid off six percent of their employees and faces major financial pressures as large EV manufacturers like Ford and Tesla are slashing their EV prices.

Ford Lowering Battery Costs
Ford is pushing to lower the cost of EVs by lowering the cost of batteries. Ford is building a huge battery manufacturing plant in Michigan that will open in 2026 and grow to an output of 35 gigawatt-hours of battery production for up to 400,000 cars annually.

NGVI Instruction Available
The Natural Gas Vehicle Institute, NGVI, has training available for CNG engines and fuel systems in a single class. The next live virtual training session will be held March 27 and 28.

Alternative Fuel Insight
Cummins Introduces Fuel Agnostic X10
Cummins will be replacing the L9 and X12 with a new “X10 Fuel Agnostic” engine, fully compliant with 2027 emission standards on all fuels. Below the head gasket, the parts are largely the same, with the components above customized for the designated fuel:

Exxon Ends Algae-for-Fuel Development
Citing slow developments toward commercialization and dropping prices for other renewable fuels, Exxon has cut their ties to Viridos, their algae development partner. Shell and Chevron had dropped their algae fuel development efforts previously.

New Renewable Diesel Production in Louisiana
Eni Sustainable Mobility and PBF Energy have entered into an agreement to construct a new biorefinery in Louisiana that will produce over 300 million gallons per year of renewable diesel.

The world’s smallest BEV, the P50, with one seat and one door, a 4kW motor and a top speed of 28mph is available. It comes as a kit that takes about 50 hours to build. The joke is that the door is a classic “suicide door,” which may be aptly named. (Hello Mr. Peterbilt!)
