EPA 2023 Clean School Bus (CSB) Grant Program
|
|
- $400 million in competitive grant funding for zero-emission school buses, clean school buses, and EVSE.
- Two grant categories: school district and Tribal applicants; and third-party applicants.
- Priority given to replace buses serving high-need local education agencies, rural areas, Tribal school districts and public school districts receiving basic support payments for students living on Tribal land, and rural areas.
- At least 40% of the funding will go to disadvantaged communities.
- Grant deadline: Tuesday, August 22.

Toyota Fuel Cell Repower Kit for Diesel Semis
|
|
CARB has approved a Toyota fuel cell repower kit that Toyota developed in partnership with Kenworth, powering 10 Kenworth T680 tractors running drayage out of the Port of Long Beach for over a year. The kit contains the fuel cell stack, battery pack, electric motors & transmission plus hydrogen fuel tanks.

Honda Developing Fuel Cell Truck
|
|
Honda has announced plans to develop a fuel semi in partnership with Isuzu, with plans to have commercial sales of the vehicles by 2027. Honda will then join all the major truck OEMs along with traditional car OEMs Toyota and Hyundai making fuel cell trucks.

NERC Warns of Summer Electrical Shortages
|
|
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has published a warning that generator retirements have outpaced new electrical generation, placing most of North America at risk for significant energy shortfalls this summer.

EVs Shorter-Lived in Fleets
|
|
A study by S&P Global Mobility shows that although EV sales are increasing, EVs remain in the vehicle fleet a much shorter time than conventional vehicles. Much higher insurance rates may be a factor, since EVs are “Totalled” by insurance companies when battery boxes are damaged or when even modest flood damage occurs.

Major solar and wind projects in the desert are destroying fragile habitats, creating killing zones for desert animals and removing major carbon sequestration sinks.

China Dominates EV Resources
|
|
“In 2020, China controlled about 92 percent of the global NdFeB magnet and magnet alloy market [neodymium-iron-boron]…58 percent of the rare earth mining market, 89 percent of the oxide separation market, and 90 percent of the metallization market.” Commerce Department, September 2022. (Note: NdFeB magnets are essential for EVs and wind turbines.)

Hyundai Dominates Fuel Cell Car Market
|
|
Hyundai has 55% of the hydrogen fuel cell car market, with Toyota second. Honda has announced a joint venture with GM to mass produce a fuel cell crossover SUV based on the Honda CR-V.
