CEC $16M Hydrogen Project Funding
  • The CEC’s $16M EnergIIZE Hydrogen funding lane will open on April 17. 
  • Eligible items include, but are not limited to, compressors, chillers, liquid and gaseous hydrogen pumps and storage, electrolysis equipment, transformers, switch gear, hydrogen pumps, high-pressure storage, point-of-sale systems, piping and pipelines.

CEC GFO-23-607 - Tribal Electric Vehicle Infrastructure, Planning, and Workforce Development
  • The purpose of this solicitation is to provide funding for Tribes, Tribal Organizations, and Tribally-owned businesses for:
  • Project Activity 1 – EV Charging Infrastructure: installing charging infrastructure for passenger and medium- and heavy-duty (MDHD) EV charging equipment, supporting infrastructure, and associated resiliency technologies.
  • Project Activity 2 – EV Infrastructure Planning: activities to support tribal participation in future EV funding opportunities and to enable tribes to plan for EV adoption.
  • Project Activity 3 – EV Workforce Training and Development: activities that support careers in EVs, EV infrastructure, and EV-related technologies.
  • $400,000 - $3,000,000 per award ($10,000,000 total)

GM Plans PHEV Pickup
GM is developing a PHEV pickup on the Silverado ICE platform while they are slowing plans for full EV pickups and vans. The ICE platform is being used because the Ultium platform will not support plug-in or range extension technology.

Hyzon, manufacturers of hydrogen fuel cell trucks has entered a joint development agreement with New Way to build a fuel call Automated Side Loader (ASL) refuse truck for the North American market.

Mercedes Reduces EV Commitment
Mercedes has announced that they will no longer commit to being 100% EV by 2030, but at 50% EV and hybrid by 2030 and will continue building ICE vehicles well past 2030.

California Truck Stop Dispenses Renewable Fuels
Cyclum Truck Stops is opening the first of six planned Truck Stops where a full range of renewable fuels will be dispensed. The first site will be in Tulare where RD, RNG, RH2, E85 and low-cost EV Charging will be available.

EPA Relaxing EV Mandate
The emission standard proposed by the EPA that would have essentially mandated EVs is being relaxed, likely as an election year concession to labor unions.

Kentucky Bill Mandates ICE Vehicles
The Kentucky House has passed a two-year budget bill that would mandate state fleet purchases to be ICE vehicles, although PHEVs would qualify. The rationale given was due to the vehicles' necessity for governmental duties, they are critical, thus making the "proven reliability" of an internal combustion engine "preferable."

ICE Vehicle Improvements
Modern ICE engines have adopted a wide array of technologies to improve efficiency and reduce both criteria and GHG emissions. 73% of 2023 LD ICE engines employed direct injection, 37% were turbocharged (allowing a smaller engine using less fuel to perform successfully), 59% had transmissions with 7 or more gears and 26% had continuously variable transmissions, allowing engine RPM to more closely match power demand.
