Medicare sets a fee schedule for all covered services. Accepting assignment means that your provider has signed a contract with the government agreeing to all of these fixed fees. Non-participating providers who do accept Medicare as insurance may accept only some of the set fees or none at all. They can charge you to 15% more than the cost recommended by Medicare. It is your best interest to seek out healthcare providers who do accept Medicare. At times you may not have a choice if there are limited resources in your area capable of providing proper care.
