The August 2021 issue of the Habitat for Neighborhood Business newsletter features HNB entrepreneurs Monique Moore, the owner of Buddy’s Auto and Tire Repair LLC. and Annetta Thomas, a Barber/Stylist, who is the owner of Against the Grainz. Also featured this month is HNB Board member Mark Higgins, a Saint Louis University Professor of Accounting in the Richard Chaifetz School of Business and the former Edward Jones Dean of the Chaifetz School. In his role as Dean, Mark encouraged the hiring of a program manager and of creating collaborations to involve SLU graduate and undergraduate business students with the HNB entrepreneurs. Those collaborations have been successful and are growing. HNB has a new SLU graduate student intern joining the program, Praise Adeyemi who is highlighted this month. Also included in this newsletter is a list of the HNB businesses, with contact information, so that you have a resource to patronize and help support the success of the minority businesses that participate in the HNB program.

Mark Higgins - HNB Board Member
Mark Higgins is a Professor of Accounting in the Richard Chaifetz School of Business at Saint Louis University. From January 1, 2015, through August 31, 2019, he served as the Edward Jones Dean of the Chaifetz School. In his role as Dean, Mark was asked to join the board by Steve Frank, the HNB-SLU Chairman at that time. As Mark learned more about the organization, he decided it would be a great avenue not only for SLU graduate students to be involved but also for SLU undergraduate students to get involved with the program. HNB entrepreneurs now work with the SLU undergraduate Service Leadership business students and with the graduate students in the SLU Capstone course. Mark also advocated for hiring a full-time person to achieve the mission and vision of HNB. HNB hired an Executive Director, Linda M. Jones, and a full-time program director, Gladys Smith, in 2018. Mark states, "My role now that I am no longer Dean is to provide guidance and assistance where the HNB Board Chair and the HNB SLU Chair need me." Kudos to Mark Higgins, HNB Board Member!

HNB Graduate Intern - Praise Adeyemi
We welcome Praise Adeyemi, a One Year MBA Student at Saint Louis University, as the new Graduate Intern for HNB. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Praise moved to Mankato, Minnesota to attend Minnesota State University. He graduated this spring with a major in Aviation Management and a minor in Business Administration.
His interest in working with Habitat for Neighborhood Business as a graduate intern stems from owning a business of his own. Knowing the struggles and hurdles start-up entrepreneurs have to go through is definitely something that he can identify with. When the opportunity to work with HNB was presented, he jumped at it. He states, "It is a great opportunity and privilege to be able to help growing businesses in the St. Louis community."
We look forward to your work with us Praise!
