Habitat for Neighborhood Business
April 2021 Newsletter
The April 2021 issue of the Habitat for Neighborhood Business newsletter features the founder and Board Chair for Habitat for Neighborhood Business, Doug Brown, a former Enterprise Rent a Car executive. Doug's vision and determination made HNB a reality to ultimately bring more commerce to underserved St. Louis city neighborhoods. This month we also feature two HNB entrepreneurs, Dorise Robinson, owner of Cardinal Healthcare Services, LLC, and Travious Brooks, owner of Brooks Family Entertainment, LLC. Read about their products and services. Our HNB mentor of the Month is DeMarco Howard, owner of Gobble Stop Smokehouse restaurant. DeMarco mentors HNB entrepreneur Byron Hayes, owner of Joe-Jo's Fish and Chicken. DeMarco is an example of the business professionals who share their expertise through mentoring HNB entrepreneurs. Lastly, featured is a recent St. Louis Magazine interview with HNB Board member Brooks Goedeker, Executive Director of St. Louis Midtown Redevelopment, who is serving as an ambassador for Saint Louis University and SSM Health, working to bring private investment to Midtown. HNB Board Member of Month
Doug Brown - Founder and Board Chair - HNB
The founder of the Habitat for Neighborhood Business® (HNB)* Douglas Brown, initially observed the near absence of businesses in economically challenged neighborhoods when visiting cities throughout the country in his years with Enterprise Rent-a-Car®. With assistance and collaboration from Saint Louis University, Doug spent two years meeting with people in area neighborhoods in need of renewal, while at the same time confirming similar conditions in other cities. Armed with this information, support from the Business School at Saint Louis University, and a conviction that something must be done. Doug gathered friends, a handful of SLU alumni, and others of like mind and with significant skill and patience launched Habitat for Neighborhood Business.

Since “retirement,” in addition to HNB, Doug has owned, partnered with, or consulted for ASPEQ, Corporate Creations, Environmental Management; Jupiter Medical Center, Maltz Jupiter Theatre, McBride & Son, MyClinic Jupiter, Paric Construction, Peak Technical Staffing, Strategically Acquired Real Estate, Tampa General Hospital, Waterway Wash and Winghaven. Doug has also been highly recognized by Ladue Horton Watkins High School, Saint Louis University, and the leading Fleet Magazine as one of the 25 Most Influential Auto Fleet People of the 20th Century.
St. Louis Magazine features HNB Board Member Brooks Goedecker
For a hype man, Brooks Goedeker is not an amped-up guy—not really ever, but specifically not on the November afternoon I’m riding shotgun in his Ford Explorer. We’re rolling east on Chouteau toward Grand (both wearing masks) and he’s making the case—in his slow, quiet way, and as an ambassador for Saint Louis University and SSM Health in their bid to lure private investment to Midtown—that sure, this industrial patch of the city may look bleak, but it could be The Next Big Thing in the city’s central corridor, that belt of prosperity between Forest Park and the Arch. Or, to use Goedeker’s phraseology: “It’s totally set up to succeed.” ... Read More
