SHEPHERD'S E-NEWS
SHUMC CELEBRATING 40 YEARS

Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church
August 23, 2019
WEEKLY PRAYER

Lord, help me to hear you say, "I am your hope."
Lord, your word says, you are the hope for hopeless
so I'm running to you with both hands stretched out
and grabbing on to you. Fill me up with hope and give me
a tangible reminder today that hope is an unbreakable
spiritual lifeline. God, you know those things in my heart
that I barely dare to hope for, today I give them to you,
I trust them to you, and ask that you, because I know that
you can, do more than I could ever guess,
imagine or request in wildest dreams.
God, you are my hope and I trust you. Amen.

PERSONAL PRAYER AVAILABLE AFTER 10:00 AM SERVICE

Each week after the 10:00 AM service, our prayer ministers, Bill and Linda White, are available near the chancel to pray for any persons who would like personal prayer. You can come to them for prayers for friends, relatives, loved ones. You can come and ask prayer for yourself. You can make very specific requests or very general requests, whichever is more comfortable. Bill and Linda will offer prayers for you and those you are concerned about right then and there.

If others are already being prayed for, please take a seat in the front pew and they will turn to you as soon as they are able.

These prayers are held in love and in strict confidence, unless you give permission for them to share. Bill and Linda have served in prayer ministry
for many years, in several churches. They are compassionate, helpful and supportive. We are grateful to be able to offer this ministry to you.

If you would be interested in becoming a personal prayer partner in this ministry, please contact them at blwhite32@@cox.net or by phone
at 623-688-7417.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry is making shawls available to anyone who feels the need for some extra covering during our service. They are located at the rear of the Sanctuary. Please return them after the service.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to provide shawls to our homebound members, as well as those in the hospital and in hospice care, as a way of letting them know that we, at the church, are thinking and praying for them.

"Can I Trust God with My Health?"
Led by Pastor Alma

NOTE: CHANGE OF MEETING PLACE

Life's storms have a way of challenging our faith in God's provision and guiding hand. This study invites us to address a variety of questions about health and faith, by looking at Scripture, theological positions and the reality of the world around us and our own lives.

We will make time to discern how the answers to these questions alter our relationship with God. Finally we will choose how we want to apply our leanings. Some of the topics included are Health, Disability, Stress and Sleep.

Once you sign up for this class, please pick up your reading materials at the church office.

Last class is Thursday, August 29
Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
Fellowship Hall Lobby
"Messy Spirituality"
Sermon Series and Class
Led by Rev. Rick Walker

Pastor Deborah will be doing a sermon series on "Messy Spirituality" in August and we plan on running a concurrent class with Rev. Rick and Linda Walker. The class will use the book by Mike Yaconelli entitled, "Messy Spirituality: God's Annoying Love for Imperfect People."

The classes will meet on Fridays at 11:00 A.M. and run for 6 weeks, ending on September 20, 2019. This class will meet in the Fellowship Hall Meeting Room. Please sign-up on the sheet at the Kiosk, or in front of the office or write on the back of your prayer and presence card "Messy." Books are available in the office for $10.00.
Laughter for the Health of It
Monday, September 30, 2019
1:00 PM
Fellowship Hall

Do you want to learn how to become happier and healthier through laughter? It has been proven that laughter has many physical and emotional benefits. For example, laughter relaxes your muscles, changes perspective, reduces stress and lowers blood pressure. Start feeling better by bringing a little laughter into your life each day.

Karen Richards, Area Agency on Aging, will show you how to give yourself permission to laugh out loud just for the health of it!! Everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

Sign up sheets will be available starting September 1, 2019 in the church office and at the kiosk. You may also call the church office at 623-584-2280.
50 Ways to Pray

Wanting new ways to pray? This might be just the class for you. Bill and Linda White will be leading a 6-week class using the book 50 Ways to Pray by Teresa A. Blythe. You can purchase the book for $12.50 in the office. The classes will meet in the Fellowship Hall Meeting Room on Thursdays at 10:30 AM beginning October 10. Please bring a pen or pencil and a notebook to journal in.

If you have any questions, you can contact them at 623-688-7417 or email blwhite32@cox.net.

The photo sessions will be October 1 through 5, beginning at 11:00 AM, with the last appointment at 6:00 PM.

DONATIONS NEEDED
We are expanding our ministry to our members with remarkably limited church life participation. We are in need of donations of portable CD and/or DVD players. Why? Listening to religious music and watching SHUMC weekly services are ways for those parishioners who cannot get around, including persons in Hospice, to feel connected and to receive spiritual nourishment, even though they may be unable to attend physically, Please bring the donations to Pastor Stephanie Soon's office. Thank you!
SAVE THE DATE!

The United Methodist women will hold a baby shower on Thursday, October 3, for the Luke Air Force Airmen's new families. It will happen at our fall "Welcome Back Luncheon." All women of our church family are invited to have lunch with us at 11:30 AM and hear about the Layette Program at Luke. Mark your calendars and soon a list of needed items will appear. We hope you will come and join us as we support the military families in our community.
MISSIONS COMMITTEE

The Missions Committee project for September is twin sheets, bath towels and wash towels for the Justa Center. These items may be gently used.

The Justa Center is a senior homeless daycare center in Phoenix. They serve the growing population of homeless seniors age 55 and older in the metro Phoenix region.

Friendship Groups are an important part of SHUMC ministries. Small groups of members and friends meet monthly for fellowship with others. The groups are focused around meals, trips and/or activities in the community. There are about 12 Friendship Groups now and more will be formed soon. If you would like to join or know more about Friendship Groups,
please contact Becky Fay at 623-518-9502.
Have you noticed the absence of a person in worship?

The CARE team is truly appreciative when you notify us about someone who has been absent from worship or when you will be gone for several weeks. There are many reasons why any of us might not be able to attend worship. However, we do not want to miss someone who may need the CARE team. Using the Prayer & Presence cards is a perfect way to alert us. If you would write the name of the absent person in the “comments” section of the card, the CARE team will contact them to learn of any support we may offer them. The CARE team follows up with phone calls if a person is absent for three consecutive weeks or as needed.
THANK YOU for being a caring congregation and always looking after each other.

In God’s love,
SHUMC CARE Team.
