Salt Creek 5th grader, Juliette Jackson, won the RPHF Solid Waste District Poster contest. She was presented with a trophy depicting her design and a $25 gift card by Lauren Haubeil (Grooms) of the RPHF Solid Waste District, which sponsored the contest.
All 5th graders in each county represented by the Solid Waste District were allowed to participate in the contest. Juliette won in Pickaway County and her entry will be on the Route 23 billboard south of DuPont for the month of April.
5th graders learned about recycling and how recycling saves energy. They also participated in classroom discussions about litter prevention, reusing material, as well as rethinking what they buy in order to prepare for this contest. This year, billboard design was added to the instruction so students would understand their message needed to be read quickly as vehicles drive by. Juliette’s entry combined all the lessons and proved to be a winner! Congratulations!
Lauren Haubeil (Grooms) of the RPHF Solid Waste District said, “Juliette’s artwork is beautifully drawn with just enough detail to show off her artistic skills but was still able to give a clear picture & message. While there are lots of great drawings to choose from, it boils down to picking one that can be easily viewed while driving on the highway. I hope this contest sparks conversation about Earth day, litter prevention and recycling in the classroom. It may be a fun project for students to participate in, but it is also a foot in the door to the topic that needs to be discussed to adults and youth.”
