Celebrate Community, Culture & Commerce this 4th of July

by Shopping Local

Join the movement to support El Paso’s small businesses through the Buy El Paso initiative. When you shop local, you’re investing in your neighbors, your economy, and most importantly in your community by keeping your dollars local.

Looking for food, snacks, and supplies to make your Independence Day celebration memorable? Locally owned since 1958, businesses like Economy Wholesale Grocers help make that possible by offering convenient options, from single items to bulk quantities, that fit every gathering, whether it’s a family picnic or a neighborhood barbecue.

With nearly 3,000 products and no membership fees, this local favorite shows just how powerful supporting small businesses can be. For over 60 years, El Pasoans have relied on trusted community staples like this one to bring people together and keep dollars circulating in our region.

Meet Johnathon Salas, a senior at The University of Texas at El Paso. He is currently part of the City of El Paso’s Undergraduate Internship Program, where he serves in the Economic & International Development Department. Under the guidance of Daniel Hanson, Administrative Division Manager, Johnathon has gained hands-on experience with the inner workings of local government and the behind-the-scenes processes that move major Economic Development projects forward.

During his internship, Johnathon has contributed to several key initiatives, including entering budget data, helping convert the department’s compliance booklet into an interactive, user-friendly feature on the department's website, and assisting with the evaluation of future project opportunities. His work has supported the City’s budgeting process for the upcoming fiscal year, helped streamline vendor payments, and contributed to the development of incentives designed to attract new investment and boost El Paso’s economy.

This undergraduate internship provides students like Johnathon with meaningful, real-world experience, while allowing the City to invest in developing its future workforce. By equipping local students with practical skills and professional insight, the program not only strengthens El Paso’s talent pipeline but also supports long-term success for employers throughout the region.

Johnathon is set to graduate in Fall 2025 and is currently exploring job opportunities, particularly in the banking industry.

Fun fact about Johnathon: He collects vinyl records.
