A Heartfelt Farewell

After several years with NCDSA, Donna is stepping back to dedicate increased time to her family. She will continue championing for her son, individuals with Down syndrome, and individuals with IDD. Donna has been a wealth of knowledge and our conference lead for many years.

Please join us at a Mom’s Night Out to celebrate and thank her for her dedication to our mission.

Celebrating One Year with Emma!

Last month we celebrated Emma's one year of employment with the North Carolina Down Syndrome Alliance, serving as the Family Support Assistant!

Not only has she been a great asset to the team, she has also played a crucial role in two recent accomplishments:

  • Receiving a Self-Advocate Employment Initiative Award from the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, which allows us to pay Emma for her work at additional events outside of her standard office hours!
  • Emma's Corner, a new segment of the monthly T-21 newsletter where Emma will highlight upcoming events!

Congratulations on your one year anniversary and thank you for all that you continue to do for the NCDSA community, Emma!

Autism Acceptance Month - Embracing Neurodiversity

As we celebrate Autism Acceptance Month, we want to share resources to those navigating the intersection of Down syndrome and autism.

  • Did you know that the North Carolina Down Syndrome Alliance (NCDSA) hosts a closed Facebook group specifically tailored to families seeking support in this area? Whether you're a parent or caregiver, connecting with others navigating this dual diagnosis can make a world of difference. Reach out to info@ncdsalliance.org if you'd like NCDSA to connect you with fellow parents and caregivers who share similar experiences.
  • Individuals with Down syndrome can also be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Check out the National Down Syndrome Society's web page, which includes "Down Syndrome and Autistic Spectrum Disorder: A Look at What We Know" by George T. Capone, M.D. This comprehensive resource offers valuable insights into the co-occurring diagnosis of Down syndrome and ASD.
  • The Down Syndrome-Autism Connection is the only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to co-occurring Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorder (DS-ASD) in the United States.
  • “When Down Syndrome and Autism Intersect” A Guide to DS-ASD for Parents and Professional “offers a thorough examination of the unique profile of a Down Syndrome-Autism Spectrum Disorder (DS-ASD) diagnosis and best practices for screening, treatment, and care taking through the lifespan.”

Let's continue spreading understanding, acceptance, and support for all individuals and their unique neurological makeup. Together, we can build a community of support, understanding, and acceptance.

Why attend?

NCDSA has assembled a diverse lineup of speakers and experts who will share their expertiseexperiences, and innovative approaches in areas such as educationhealthcare, and community support. Transition to Pre-K Webinar Series

Transitioning to preschool for children with Down syndrome doesn't have to overwhelm parents. This series is designed for parents and caregivers of children aged 0-3, offering insights to prepare for the move from Early Intervention to preschool services. Gain knowledge on the special education process and your role in it, empowering you to participate effectively in developing a tailored plan for your child. The series culminates in a Roundtable with experienced parents and a 30-minute IEP consultation to support your child's transition, offered in-person or virtually.

Research Opportunity

The research team at UNC - Chapel Hill and University of Nebraska - Omaha is working to create an evidence-based, online nutrition and physical activity program for families of young children with Down syndrome called HomeGrown.

The HomeGrown program will include short videos for families about various nutrition and physical activity topics. They are looking for 8 families to provide feedback on a few "beta" videos to help us make the content relatable, practical, and enjoyable.

Your feedback is incredibly important to the final product, and you will be compensated with a $25 gift card for your time and expertise as a family member of a child with Down syndrome.

If you are interested, please complete this interest form.

What you need to know about Medicaid and the Tailored plan

Eligible North Carolinians who are covered by NC Medicaid Direct will be covered by a Tailored Plan beginning July 1. The name of their Medicaid plan will change but the services covered remain the same. A bilingual toolkit with accessible resources is now available for people impacted by the transition to Tailored Plans.
