YOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
The SAL Sheriff’s Youth Leadership Academy is a program within YSU, hosted at several school sites in the Sacramento County. Offered as an elective, the program exposes youth to the different aspects of law enforcement and introduces them to further professional careers. Further, officers from other units, guest speakers from the community and YSU deputies helped participate and help mentor the youth.
SHOCK
YSU deputies started SHOCK (Class 19-2). SHOCK is a referral-based diversion program for youth, 12-17 years old, who are demonstrating risky behavior and are at high-risk of entering the criminal justice system. Over the course of 10 weeks, students hear from guest speakers who work in various areas of the criminal justice system and participate in a weekly life-skills class presented by the Health Education Council. They go on two field trips – one to Sacramento State University’s Peak Adventures Ropes Challenge Course and the other to California State Prison Solano. The students participate in team building and problem solving challenges, as well as a drill and ceremony practice. So far, this program has been extremely successful.
SAFE SPACES
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office YSU team partnered with the nonprofit, Impact Sac, to help with an after school program called Safe Spaces. Safe Spaces is held every Wednesday from 1pm until 3pm at Liberty Towers church. This provides teens a place where they can hang out, eat for free, and preoccupy their time with good positive influences. During this program, YSU deputies assist with homework, participate in basketball games, or hang out with the teens. SAL makes a difference by interacting with them on a more personal level while establishing positive relationships.
