Full Week Of Activities – Thanks For Those Who Engaged!
The week we’re wrapping up has been a full schedule of very important activities with opportunities for farmers and ranchers to be engaged.  Thank you for those who showed up and got involved.  The February 18 th  Bureau of Land Management (BLM) scoping meeting for possible livestock grazing regulation changes, held in Elko, was one of the sessions which benefited by full participation of those who have a stake in the conversations taking place.

February 18 and 20 were dates of public meetings for the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act.  Thank you to ranchers who offered their stories and perspectives on how Wilderness designations will impact their grazing allotments.

Nevada Farm Bureau leaders travel to Washington, D.C. for American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Issue Advisory Committees.  Thanks to Darrell Pursel of Lyon County and Jordan Brough of Elko County for their involvement in AFBF Issue Advisory Committee meetings.  Pursel is a member of the Water Committee and Brough is a member of the Federal Lands Committee.

Farm Bureau and Other Farm/Ranch Groups Take Initiative For Sustainable Future
Twenty-one farm and ranch groups representing millions of U.S. farmers and ranchers are launching Farmers for a Sustainable Future (FSF), a coalition committed to environmental and economic sustainability. This coalition will serve as a primary resource for lawmakers and policymakers as they consider climate policies.

The coalition will share with elected officials, media and the public U.S. agriculture’s commitment to sustainability and the incredible strides already made to reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint. As policy proposals are developed and considered, the goal is for the coalition and its guiding principles to serve as a foundation to ensure the adoption of meaningful and constructive policies and programs affecting agriculture.

Farmers and ranchers are committed stewards of the land, leading the way to climate-smart farming by promoting soil health, conserving water, enhancing wildlife, using nutrients efficiently, and caring for their animals. For decades, they have pushed past the boundaries of innovation thanks to investments in agricultural research and the adoption of practices that improve productivity, provide clean and renewable energy, enhance sustainability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon.
FSF’s guiding principles call for policies that support science-based research, voluntary incentive-based conservation programs, investment in infrastructure, and solutions that ensure vibrant rural communities and a healthy planet.

FSF members include American Farm Bureau Federation, American Pulse Association, American Sugar Alliance, American Soybean Association, National Association of Wheat Growers, National Barley Growers Association, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Corn Growers Association, National Cotton Council of America, National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, National Farmers Union, National Sorghum Producers, National Milk Producers Federation, National Pork Producers Council, National Sunflower Association, Southern Peanut Farmers Association, United Egg Producers, U.S. Canola Association, U.S. Dry Bean Council, USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, USA Rice.

Agricultural Producers Seek To Share Their Story With Students
Pictured here is this year’s “Book of the Year.” Nevada Farm Bureau has a number of these books available for county Farm Bureaus to be purchased for use in their programs for distribution to local schools or reading programs.  Contact Brittney Money ( [email protected] ) or by calling 1-800-992-1106    at Nevada Farm Bureau to place your order for the book and the teacher’s support material that goes with the books

Ag In The Classroom has been a program supported by county Farm Bureaus and Nevada Farm Bureau over the years. The emphasis has changed in this program to be more oriented to understanding agricultural production by way of Agricultural Literacy, but the degree of support and attention has not waned.  A number of county Farm Bureaus and coalitions of agricultural groups work together to put on programs for students or go into their local classrooms to read agriculturally focused books.  Thank you to the volunteers who are involved in these extremely important activities!

American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) President Zippy Duvall offered these thoughts on the role that Farm Bureau’s Foundation is working to achieve for agricultural literacy.
