Service Spotlights

Congrats, to our dedicated former mentor and current mentor match coordinator Giovanni Brown for his recent promotion. Since September 2018, Giovanni has served on DonCARES and has been the most dedicated mentor to his recent high school graduate mentee Kris. We are grateful for your service. During the 2019-2020 school year, Giovanni will work in conjunction with DonCARES Executive Director Donovan Forrest, matching and providing support to mentor matches at The U School in Lower North Philadelphia. In addition to his post at DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Giovanni serves as board secretary on Strong Men Overcoming Obstacles Through Hard Work (S.M.O.O.T.H) Temple University Section. Check out what Carly has to say about her experience interning this summer at Harlem Fashion Row as our July Pre-Service Spotlight: "Being an intern for Harlem Fashion Row has inspired and influenced my passion to advocate and highlight people of color who are underrepresented in so many spaces. My internship extends beyond Harlem, transcends Fashion even; seeing so many women of color using their platform to support other black women is beyond empowering for me.    This internship has expanded my perception of what I can achieve even as an undergraduate student. It has challenged and pushed me, as well as shown me that I can balance being active on campus and working. Additionally, it has given me various types of hands on experience and made me confident in the work that I do."

#PeoplePoweredRadio On Wednesday, July 10, 2019 from 1 PM to 3 PM, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. Founder and Executive Director Donovan Forrest  was a guest on Heart City Radio hosted by Malik Boyd. Heart of the City is an imprint of the Premiere Brand, founded by Boyd. Premiere Brand is a brand development firm headquartered in Center City Philadelphia. Forrest was a guest on the segment: "Brothers Gonna Work it Out" During the interview, Forrest described that the early work of black men such as Richard Allen & Prince Hall as his daily inspiration for his social entrepreneurship and social justice work fueling DonCARES' unique mission. Boyd stated that Allen and Hall held integral roles in black advancement despite the poor social and racial climate for blacks during America's Early Republic.

A GREAT SUCCESS O n Saturday, July 13, 2019, from noon until 2 PM, DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. and Strong Men Overcoming Obstacles Through Hard Work (S.M.O.O.T.H) Temple Section successful hosted DonCARES of Philadelphia's Third Annual Hydration Walk for the homeless. This year, DonCARES and S.M.O.O.T.H were joined by Chris Zeigler of Omega Delta Delta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In attendance were also members of DonCARES and S.M.O.O.T.H who are also members of the National Society of Black Engineers, Queen in You, Temple Section, The National Council of Negro Women, and the Epsilon Delta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. Each organization was successfully part of giving out close to 200 cool bottles of water to Philadelphian's in need. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
