🎉🎁🎂Happy Birthday to professional tennis player Serena Williams. Serena learned tennis from her father on the public courts in Los Angeles and turned professional in 1995, one year after her sister Venus. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranked her world No. 1 in singles on eight separate occasions between 2002 and 2017. Serena holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined among active players. Her total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles marks the record for the most Grand Slam wins by a tennis player in the Open Era. Serena has also won four Olympic gold medals, one in women's singles and three in women's doubles—an all-time record shared with her sister, Venus. The arrival of the Williams sisters has been credited with ushering in a new era of power and athleticism on the women's professional tennis tour. September 29th: 9/29/1975

On September 29, 1975, WGPR-TV, the first television station in the United States to be independently owned and operated by African Americans, went on air. The station was founded in Detroit by Dr. William V. Banks, an attorney, businessman, and founder of the fraternal order of the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons and Order of Eastern Stars. WGPR-TV opened doors to aspiring reporters, producers, directors, salespeople, accountants, and managers. Unlike other local Detroit stations, independent WGPR-TV didn't have to rely on a national network to supply its programs. The station filled the majority of its broadcast day with shows produced by local writers, producers, directors, and performers. WGPR-TV remained on air for 20 years and is now officially a historic landmark. Take a look at how WGPR-TV helped to amplify Black voices https://youtu.be/C9yjLOMRGkk
