Terry McMillan, image

October 18th: 10/18/1951

🎉🎁🎂Happy Birthday to novelist Terry McMillan. Terry’s work is characterized by female protagonists and her first book, “Mama” was published in 1987. Unsatisfied with her publisher's limited promotion of “Mama”, Terry promoted her own novel by writing to thousands of booksellers, particularly to African American bookstores, and the book soon sold out of its initial first hardcover printing of 5,000 copies. She achieved national attention in 1992 with her third novel, “Waiting to Exhale”. In 1995, the novel was adapted into a film of the same title, directed by Forest Whitaker and starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon. In 1998, another of Terry's novels, “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”, was adapted into a film starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs. WAVES, image

October 19th: 10/19/1944

On October 19, 1944, the U.S. Navy began admitting Black women to serve as administrative officers in the Women’s Reserve of the U.S. Navy. On July 30, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Navy Women’s Reserve Act into law, creating what was commonly known as the WAVES — Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service — a division of the U.S. Navy, created during World War II to free up male personnel for sea duty. This paved the way for the breakthrough for black women in America’s armed forces, which would come a few years later. Of the more than 80,000 women serving during World War II, only 72 were African American. The U.S. military’s history of racial segregation formally came to an end on July 26, 1948.
