Ebony Magazine, image

November 1st: 11/1/1945

On November 1, 1945, the first issue of Ebony magazine was published. Ebony, a monthly magazine, is geared to a middle-class African American readership. It was the first Black-oriented magazine in the U.S. to attain national circulation. John H. Johnson of Chicago founded ebony. John envisioned Ebony as a news and photo magazine patterned much after “Life” magazine but specifically designed for Black readers. It initially highlighted Black entertainers and sports figures but has since shifted its editorial focus to include Black achievement of all sorts. It honors black identity by portraying black life, refuting stereotypes, and inspiring readers to overcome racial and other barriers to success. By the beginning of the 21st century, its circulation had reached about 1.8 million.
