DISTRICT 3 SCHOOL

Local 1944 is proud to be able to send members and delegates to conferences, courses and academic opportunities. Attending union functions is a great way to get empowered, make some new friends, or catch up with old ones. It is a chance to be inspired by other activists and reinvigorate your sense of collaboration by building better connections!

"My class was very small (6 students) one of which was brought in from Johannesburg South Africa, he was truly an inspiration and an experienced activist. This course will help me bring ideas of solidarity and comradery to help our unit unite and rise as a strong group. Also bringing awareness of the effects of capitalism and the future of our work force. We all need to work together to become stronger."

- Darrel Laithwaite

JUSTICE CONFERENCE

"Members had an incredible week attending inspiring presentations and impactful panel discussions. From learning about the historic Elliot Lake Strike for better working conditions to engaging with sessions like Raising the Bar on Women’s Health and Safety, our members gained valuable insights and skills. Delegates participated in a range of classroom sessions, covering essential topics such as Workplace Committee Training, No More Missing Sisters, Violence and Harassment in the Workplace, and even How to Speak to Politicians So They Listen.

The week wasn't just about learning, it was also about connection. Our members built strong bonds with other Locals, met USW Staff, and engaged with leadership, including all District Directors and our Canadian National Director, Marty Warren."

-Richard Blais, REO of Alberta

DISTRICT 3 CONFERENCE - BETTER WORK FOR EVERYBODY

Delegates gathered in Winnipeg, on Treaty One lands at the end of October to celebrate and honour the values that unite USW.

"On Tuesday's Plenary, we listened to Elder Eric Plett and learned some of the local Indigenous history. The day was filled with some great speakers. As the day continued, we learned of some of the accomplishments that USW has done over the past year. We heard from MFL President Kevin Rebeck, and International President Dave McCall. The afternoon workshop that I was signed up for was “Building stronger locals” How to engage new members and ways to get them involved. Some very helpful points to bring back to the locals or units. This was my first Union involvement, and it will not be my last!!!!" - Daryl Innes

A huge congratulations goes out to Robin Navin for winning the 2024 D3 Outstanding Service Award. She is a member of the National Executive Board as a Trustee, the Engagement Committee, Women of Steel Committee, participated in the Steelworker vote, and a Shop Steward facilitator. Thank you Robin, we appreciate all the work that you do!

UNIONISM ON TURTLE ISLAND COURSE

"Throughout the week, the class went over the history of our Indigenous brothers and sisters from when they were the original peoples, through the Indian Act, the 60’s Scoop, Residential Schools and into today's world, and the ongoing impacts of these colonization attempts. Through compassionate dialogue and use of the traditional discussion circles, the difficult and often emotional stories were shared and worked through, and plans on continuing our mutual path of reconciliation were developed.” - Steve McWhirter

DISTRICT 5 CONFERENCE - STEELWORKERS CHANGE THE WORLD

Our delegates proudly represented our local at the District 5 Conference in Saguenay, Quebec. The convention was a profound reminder of the significant gains that labour movements can make when we work together. Resolutions were passed and calls to action made demonstrating how when we invest in people, we can make a better life for all.

A huge thank you to our delegates for all the great work they do, and everyone who makes these events memorable and empowering!
