The Companion

August 2026

Welcome to the For Pets' Sake E-Newsletter!

Supporting Planned Pethood: Volunteers working to improve the lives of companion animals in Montezuma and Dolores Counties, Colorado.

FOR PET’S SAKE ANNUAL MEETING NEEDS YOU!!!!!

Every year FPS invites everyone to our Annual Meeting and picnic, where we update members and friends on what FPS has done and is doing to assist animals in our area. Please set aside this time to celebrate YOUR contribution. We will gather on Sunday, August 23, at the Parque de Vida East Playground Picnic Pavilion from 1 to 3. Please bring a potluck item to share. Drinks will be provided.

At the annual meeting FPS elects, or re-elects board members. Everyone is welcome--For Pets’ Sake members and volunteers, anyone interested in membership or volunteering, and anyone in the community who just wants to know what we’re up to. For Pets’ Sake continues its 42 years as an all-volunteer organization.

In the newsletter we tell heart-breaking, and heart-warming, stories about the animals (and their people) For Pets’ Sake has helped. This meeting is your opportunity to meet the people who perform these “miracles” every day and to hear first hand their heartwarming stories. Learn how you may become part of these miracles. For Pets’ Sake is thrilled to see new people coming forward to support our work!!!

Please make a special effort to join us at the For Pets’ Sake 42nd Annual Meeting this year. It’s a great way to meet YOUR FPS Board Members and volunteers, and to make your commitment to the ongoing success of For Pets’ Sake. Local pets need YOU!! Together we can do so much more to help animals in need.

Hope to see YOU there!!!!

Happy Tails: Chloe, Now Maple

Sweet Chloe showed up one morning in early April as if she had been waiting for someone to love her. Despite being painfully thin and covered in fleas, she greeted everyone with a wagging tail and a heart full of trust. Chloe was scanned for a microchip, but no chip was found, and no one came looking for this beautiful girl.

Her finder desperately wanted to help but wasn't able to keep her. She was moved into one of our foster homes, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. FPS began searching for either a rescue partner or the perfect forever family.  As it turned out, the perfect family found her.

One of our rescue partners sent an adoption applicant our way who seemed like the ideal match—a young, active couple who had recently lost their beloved dog. One of them works from home, meaning Chloe would rarely be alone. We have received several updates and photos since her adoption, and it's clear that Chloe—now Maple—is absolutely thriving.

A month or two after her adoption, FPS received this wonderful update from her family: "We ended up doing Maple's DNA test and ran a guessing contest with our friends. We ended up hitting $270 for the pot, so Zach and I matched it and just made a donation to For Pets' Sake via the website. Thought you might be interested in her breed breakdown! She's doing great and getting more comfortable every day. She's become a real snuggle bug, especially with me. She gets in the middle to protect me if Zach tries to hug or kiss me 😆 We're so happy to have her."

What an incredibly fun and creative idea! Not only did Maple's DNA test settle the breed guesses, but it also inspired a generous $270 donation to For Pets' Sake. We are so grateful for their kindness and support.

The entire FPS family couldn't be happier for Maple and her wonderful new family. Stories like hers remind us that every rescued dog deserves a chance—and sometimes, that chance leads to a lifetime of love, a few laughs, and even a surprise gift that helps save the next dog in need.
