BC to pause Gifted Program for High school

Lets focus on Gifted education

When public schools are reducing their focus on gifted education, Choice School is indeed pioneering and thriving. Under the leadership of our Principal and the Board of Directors, Choice School stands as a beacon for gifted and twice exceptional children in Richmond, British Columbia.

While some institutions may be scaling back, Choice School is unwavering in its commitment to providing a unique and enriching curriculum tailored to the needs of gifted learners. Our vision extends beyond traditional boundaries, fostering nourishing, engaging, and collaborative learning environments where students can flourish.

In a world where education is evolving, Choice School remains steadfast, believing that every moment is an opportunity for growth. Our passion for teaching, combined with our experience with gifted children infuses the school with a spirit of exploration and possibility.

So, while others may close doors, Choice School opens them wider, inviting students to embark on a lifelong journey of learning, curiosity, and excellence.

Teacher Feature

Ms. Jameela

Ms. Jameela strives to find a connection with each student. She is the face they see when they arrive in the morning and when they leave at the end of the day.

Her connection with students is very different from an educator as she is the administrative assistant. Ms. Jameela is there to help students with their concerns whether it be with friendships, school, first aid etc. Ms. Jameela gets the pleasure of connecting with every student in the school on a different level than of just in one classroom. She is there alongside the students through many activities they participate in. She plans many events for the school, as well creates some promotional advertising utilizing her knowledge of Graphic Design and Marketing.

Ms. Jameela has always had a strong passion for arts, crafts, and creativity. She attended College for Graphic Design and incorporates her artistic ability into her work. Having this creative knowledge drives her to help students become passionate about their own abilities.

Ms. Jameela’s family originated from Uganda, Africa, where she had the opportunity to visit to explore her family’s roots and culture. She spends her free time with her family and friends, especially with her 18-year-old daughter and her dog. She thoroughly enjoys sketching portraits and real-life stills. She is a big “Foodie” and is always exploring new places and cuisines to try.

Using her creative passion, she turned a hobby into a small business where she makes all-natural beauty, bath, and candle products. Everything from marketing to production, she does it all herself. She believes that what we use on our skin should come in the most natural forms.

Presently, Ms. Jameela enjoys learning with the students and building strong connections with them every day.

Re-enrollment

Letters for re-enrollment have now been sent out to all parents. As you know, February marks the start of our re-enrollment season. We offer priority re-enrollment for current Choice families. With many inquiries and confirmed experience days in the coming weeks, it is important that you confirm your re-enrollment for the 2024/25 school year. We ask that you return the tuition agreements right away so that we can start planning for the 2024/25 school year.

Please also note that we are offering enrollment into grade 9 for our grade 8 students.

Jump Rope for Heart

This is the first time that we are participated in “Jump Rope for Heart”.

Jump Rope for Heart is a school fundraising event that students participate in to raise funds. Students discover fun ways to get active and practice healthy habits while helping others by raising money to help beat heart disease and stroke. Through this initiative, kids learn the importance of physical activity and healthy habits, building a foundation for a healthy life.

The month of February was designated as “Jump Rope for Heart” month at Choice School. Each week, students were given incentives for initiating healthy habits that promote good health.

Week 1 – running

Week 2 – eating healthy fruits

Week 3 – eating healthy vegetables

Week 4 – skipping

During weeks 2 & 3, we bought a variety of vegetables and fruit for the whole school to enjoy. The school raised almost $2,000 that will go towards raising awareness for heart disease.

We wish to thank the entire Choice School community for your support in this initiative.

American math Contest 8

The American Math Contest 8 is written every year and is primarily for grade 8 students. However, as we have a number of gifted students excelling at math, our students in grades 6, 7 & 8 participated in this. The following students performed particularly well:

Louie Liu (gr 6) – First Place

Leon Xue (gr 7) – Second Place

Oliver Ye (gr 7) – Third place

We are proud of all students for achieving great success at this prestigious contest and enjoying problem solving at this level.

Science Fair

Our first Science Fair was an astounding success. Each student researched, experimented, hypothesized and then summarised an element of science inquiry. The whole process culminated in an exhibition in our Choice School gym.

The gym was packed with practically every parent coming over with their family. There was excitement as parents questioned each scientist about what they did, why they chose a particular topic and what challenges they encountered on the way.

The students in grades 7 & 8 were judged by our panel of judges. After some collaboration and discussion, the following students were thought to have the best projects in grade 7 & 8:

Miguel (gr 7)

Kaleb (gr 7)

Hanson (gr 7)

These students will be representing Choice School at the Greater Vancouver Regional Fair in April.

We are so proud of all our students that participated in this initiative.

Choice School chess

Five of our students participated in the Vancouver Chess Challenge at UBC. The players spent the whole Sunday playing five games each with players from different schools.

Some of the games were rather challenging, but our players learned from each encounter. Two of our players qualified for the Provincial Chess Challenge coming up in April.

On March 10, we will be taking our chess team to UBC to play for “Best elementary school for Chess” in BC.

Student Led conferences

Student led conferences were held in February. This is the second year that we have offered conferences in this format.

Student-led conferences are a dynamic approach to parent-teacher conferences that empower students to take an active role in their own learning. These are similar to traditional parent-teacher conferences, but with a twist. In student-led conferences, the student is present and in charge of leading the discussion.

SchoolReach

SchoolReach Reach for the Top is an engaging academic quiz competition designed for high school students. However, our amazing students in grades 5 and up play with Mr. Bolina every Tuesday, and they are brilliant.

As we are the only BC team at Junior level, it has been challenging to find other teams to play with. However, after making some contacts, we have now been invited to play in the Alberta Provincials. This will involve us travelling to Calgary on April 13th and participate in the contest. We are so excited about this venture!

This game is so exciting that teachers also play this with each other on Thursday lunchtimes. We think a students versus teachers game is on the horizon soon!

Please encourage your child to consider joining our SchoolReach club on Tuesday lunchtimes. Some sample questions can be downloaded for practice by clicking on these links.

New laptops

New computers have been purchased for classes Hemlock, Birch, Pine and Fir. These are 15.6” i3 computers and are much (much!) faster than the small laptops that they currently have. Having good resources for our students is absolutely important and we are delighted that we are able to do this.

Spring flowers

In the fall, our students in classes Oak, Cedar and Hemlock classes planted spring bulbs in one of our vegetable boxes. These flowers are now beginning to bloom with the daffodils being among the first set of flowers.

Over the next couple of months, you will see an array of flowers providing some beautiful color in our grounds.

Ice Skating

Our ice skating field trip is not just about gliding gracefully on the ice; it’s an opportunity to explore the fascinating science and physics behind skating. From the laws of motion to kinetic energy, our students gained insights into how skaters move, balance, and perform those impressive jumps and spins. Above all, its a fun day out.

The entire Choice School community participated in ice skating at the Richmond Oval. We were all looking forward to this field trip for a long time as it allows for everyone to get involved. Most students arrived at the school and were transported to the Oval by our school bus. However, many parents opted to go straight to the Oval and even joined in the fun.

During this field trip, students learned to balance while skating (and also have fun)
