Recently, there have been instances whereby student safety is compromised in the parking lot. There is usually a 15 minute window in the morning and afternoon when there is a rush of activity. Please be careful during these times, as many vehicles are entering and exiting the parking lot.

We ask that all parents :

  • park in designated areas
  • do not embark/disembark children in the middle of the lane
  • do not park at an angle
  • the parking lot is a one way lane. PLEASE DO NOT EXIT through the entrance.

Remembrance day Assembly

On Friday, November 8th, 2024, the entire school gathered for a significant assembly to honor Remembrance Day.

The ceremony was beautifully executed, featuring students who sang, recited poems, and contemplated the importance of Remembrance Day. Our students delivered several memorable musical performances.

Parents were welcomed to attend, and many participated in the event. The meaning of this day was articulated by our Principal, Mr. Sukhbir Bolina.

Every class demonstrated exceptional behavior during the assembly, listening attentively, showing respect, and concentrating on each segment and performance.

Choice School Toy Drive

Cedar class has once again been working hard to put together a Toy Drive for Choice School. They will be collecting toys to donate to a local charity, Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG).

RCRG has been a part of the Richmond community for over 50 years supporting local citizens of all ages. Last year, RCRG distributed 8600 toys over the holiday season and helped over 2,800 people in the community.

The students in Cedar have been involved in every step of the Toy Drive, including brainstorming, planning, distributing jobs, marketing, and toy organization. They have decorated the school with colourful posters and set up toy donations bins at the entrance to the school. They hope that Choice School can fill up the bins and more with wonderful toys for all the children in need in our community.

We will be collecting toys up to from Monday, December 9th. Please bring a new and unwrapped toy to school and drop it off in the donation bins by the main entrance. A wish list of toys, provided by RCRG, was sent out to families by email. We thank you for your contribution.

This experiment introduced students to transpiration, where water evaporates from leaves, creating a suction force that pulls water upward through the xylem.

Science in Birch class

Students in Birch class have been conducting an experiment using freshly cut celery stalks and colored water to explore how plants transport and absorb water.

Observing the celery's structures, they learned about the xylem, which transports water from roots to leaves, as the food coloring vividly highlighted its pathways. They also examined the epidermis, the protective outer layer that aids water retention.

To deepen their understanding, students examined thin celery slices under a microscope, observing the intricate internal structures, with the xylem vessels vividly stained by the dye, standing out as tiny tubes within the plant tissue. This close-up view provided a detailed understanding of how the xylem functions as a water transport network. The hands-on activity offered a visual and interactive way to grasp the processes that sustain plant life.

Conflict coaches

Cedar class has started something new this month for the school. We have been studying peaceful problem solving (conflict resolution) throughout the term and they have taking a "licensing exam" to be a Conflict Coach. Conflict Coaches will be outside during recess and lunch wearing a green pinny and a badge. Their job is to help resolve conflicts that may occur outside.

Conflict Coaches will be playing as normal but if any child in the school has a problem, they can find someone in a green pinny to help guide them through the conflict in an appropriate way. Coaches will be on a weekly rotating schedule.

Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC)

The Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC) is a worldwide online challenge run by University of Waterloo in Canada. It introduces computer science to students and is designed to get students with little or no previous experience excited about computing.

The BCC is a problem solving contest with a focus on computational and logical thinking. Questions are inspired by topics in computer science but only require comfort with concepts found in mathematics and computer science curriculum. Connections to Computer Science are described in the solutions to all past contests.

This year, we offered the grade 5/6 contest along with the grade 7/8 challenge. Students are presented with various situations in which they need to use their analytical skills and apply logical and critical thinking techniques to answer the questions.

A number students from Choice School participated and many of our students completed the challenge in about 30 minutes. The top three results are as follows:

The grade 5/6 distinction winners were as follows:

Ryan 55 out of 60

Darel 50 out of 60

The grade 7/8 distinction winners were as follows:

Logan 86 out of 90

Louie 76 out of 90

Justin 76 out of 90

Clement 72 out of 90

Keyan 72 out of 90

These results are very impressive! We wish to congratulate the students for the great results and thank the teachers and administration for the opportunity to participate in this challenge.

School Lunchtime clubs

During the past few weeks, we have started a choice of clubs that meet once a week at lunchtimes:

School Reach

We are excited to continue this dynamic Jeopardy-style game that not only tests general knowledge but also aligns beautifully with Choice School's commitment to fostering creativity and critical thinking among our gifted learners. Students have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge across a diverse range of topics, including math, geography, entertainment, science, and vocabulary. This is run by Mr. Bolina.

Art Club

Do you find yourself craving a creative outlet in the middle of your day? Are you looking for a fun, relaxing way to express yourself and connect with others? If so, we’re thrilled to introduce the Lunchtime Art Club—your new favorite way to spend your lunch break! This club is run by Ms. Raisbeck and promotes the creation and production of a variety of art pieces. No prior experience is necessary—just an open mind and a willingness to have fun.

The Spelling Bee Club is a fun and engaging space for anyone who loves words or wants to improve their spelling skills. Whether you're a spelling champion in the making or just starting your journey, this club is a fantastic way to boost your confidence, expand your vocabulary, and have a great time with peers. This is run by Ms. Sueyoshi.

Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a curious beginner, this club provides a supportive and fun environment for all. This is led by one of our students, Magnus.

Rubik's Cube club

A Rubik's Cube Club is student led (Keyan) and is dedicated to exploring and solving the famous 3D puzzle known as the Rubik's Cube. The club brings together individuals of all skill levels, from beginners to experts, who share a common interest in solving this challenging puzzle and improving their solving times.

Louie wins skating medal

ZiXiao Liu from Fir class won first place of Star 6 Men Free Program in 2024 Jingle Blades Competition. Louie has been training with Champs International Skating Club BC for many years.

In order to balance his studies and training, Louie has made extraordinary efforts. With training three days each week, he has achieved success step by step with his unwavering will. This perseverance is really admirable. Well done Louie!

SchoolReach News

As Choice School is the only school in BC with a Junior team (gr 7 - 8), we have nobody to compete against. Therefore, our players have agreed to play in the Intermediate league (gr 9 - 10).

We are so proud of our players that we won the the first game in the league. We visited Vancouver Technical Secondary School On November 20 and played two games of SchoolReach. The result is shown in the picture above.

We are so proud!
