Science Fair

The Choice School Science Fair proved to be a remarkable achievement. Every student engaged in research, experimentation, hypothesis formulation, and the summarization of a specific aspect of scientific inquiry. This entire endeavor culminated in an exhibition held in the gymnasium of our Choice School.

The gym was filled to capacity, with nearly every parent attending alongside their families. A palpable sense of excitement filled the air as parents inquired about each student's project, exploring their motivations for selecting particular topics and the challenges they faced throughout the process.

The panel of judges evaluated the projects submitted by students in grades 7 and 8. Following thorough collaboration and discussion, the students recognized for having the most outstanding projects in these grades are.

Congratulations to the following students for their impressive finalist placements at the Choice School Science Fair:

Justin (grade 8)

Clement (grade 7)

Louie (grade 7)

As the next step, these students will be nominated to represent Choice School at the Greater Vancouver Regional Fair in April.

We take great pride in all our students who participated in this initiative.

Our Students Shine in the AMC 8 Math Contest!

We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our students in this year’s AMC 8 math contest! The AMC 8, a prestigious national mathematics competition for middle school students, challenges young mathematicians with complex problem-solving and critical-thinking tasks. Our students demonstrated remarkable dedication and skill, achieving incredible results.

A special congratulations goes to one of our talented students who earned a perfect score (Louie from grade 7) — an extraordinary accomplishment that highlights their hard work, perseverance, and mathematical prowess. This rare achievement places them among the top young mathematicians in the nation and reflects the strength of our school’s mathematics program.

Beyond this exceptional performance, many of our students achieved high scores, showcasing the depth of talent within our school. Their success is a testament to the effectiveness of our extended math program, which provides students with additional opportunities to explore and excel in mathematics. Through rigorous training, problem-solving sessions, and an encouraging learning environment, our program continues to help students reach new academic heights.

Vancouver Chess Challenge

On February 9, 2025, Choice School students put their strategic skills to the test at the Vancouver Chess Challenge, competing against some of the best young chess players in the region. For many of our students, this was their first-ever chess tournament, making their strong performances even more impressive. They demonstrated focus, determination, and great sportsmanship throughout the competition.

We are incredibly proud to announce that two of our students (Noah and Ryan) have qualified for the Provincial Chess Challenge, which will take place in April. Their hard work, dedication, and love for the game have earned them a spot among British Columbia’s top young chess players.

A huge congratulations to all our participants for their fantastic efforts! Each student represented Choice School with excellence, showing resilience in tough matches and learning valuable lessons along the way. We look forward to supporting our qualifiers as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.

Student led conferences

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the families who attended our recent Student-Led Conferences. Your presence and support mean so much to our students and our school community. It was truly wonderful to see students taking ownership of their learning, sharing their achievements, and setting goals for their continued growth.

Our students have been working incredibly hard, and their dedication is showing! From academic progress to leadership skills, we are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm they bring to the classroom every day. These conferences gave them the opportunity to showcase their learning, reflect on their strengths, and identify areas for improvement—all essential skills for lifelong success.

We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s education. Together, we are creating a learning environment where students feel empowered, confident, and ready to succeed.

Choice School student performs in Ice Skating

We have an update on a major competition that one of our students participated in.

Patrick (class Hemlock) participated in the BC STAR 2 Ice Skating competition in Kelowna this week.

Patrick performed exceptionally well and earned a Silver Ribbon in the competition. We are very proud of Patrick's accomplishments which are a result of hard work and persistence.

Pink Shirt Day

We are proud that our students and staff participated in Pink Shirt Day, a global movement dedicated to raising awareness about bullying prevention and promoting kindness and inclusion. On Feb 26, students and staff wore pink to show their commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

Throughout the day, students engaged in meaningful discussions, participated in activities that encouraged empathy and respect, and worked on creating a more positive and caring school environment.

Fraser River Discovery Centre

Birch and Pine students embarked on an enriching field trip to deepen their understanding of the historical trade between First Nations and European traders along the Fraser River. They explored how Indigenous communities skillfully navigated the river, using it as a vital trade route long before European contact. Students also learned about the exchange of goods such as furs, salmon, and tools, as well as the lasting impacts of these interactions on both cultures. Through hands-on activities and guided discussions, they gained valuable insights into the river’s role in shaping the region’s history.

"The Trading Trail" field trip invites students to explore the history of trade along the Fraser River, focusing on the interactions between Indigenous peoples and European fur traders. The program included a visual presentation on the history of trade, hands-on archaeological activities where students excavate and analyze artifacts, and the opportunity to keep an archaeologist’s journal. The experience concluded with a competitive game to understand the value of traded items.

International Baccalaureate program

After thoughtful discussions, careful consideration of the feedback from teachers and parents, and a comprehensive review of the benefits and potential challenges, the Board of Directors has officially passed a motion to introduce the Primary Years Programme (PYP) – IB as an addition to our current program, starting in September 2025.

Let us be clear—Choice School will always be a school for gifted children first and only. This transition does not change who we are; rather, it enhances how we fulfill our mission. The PYP framework will complement our existing approach by further enriching the inquiry-based, student-centered learning that we already prioritize, while maintaining the personalized and supportive environment that makes Choice School unique.

We made this decision with great care, incorporating valuable perspectives from parents, educators, and stakeholders. We are confident that adding the PYP will provide our students with a globally recognized curriculum that enhances creativity, critical thinking, and a love for lifelong learning—without compromising our focus on gifted education.
