National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed September 30. The day honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis Survivors and their families and communities and ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Canadian flags on all BC government buildings will be flown at half-mast from sunrise until sunset on September 30. Where a Canadian flag and a British Columbia flag fly near one another, both flags should be lowered to half-mast. This national day provides an opportunity for Canadians to commemorate the history and ongoing trauma caused by residential schools. The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation honours those who were lost, and the survivors, families, and communities who continue to grieve. (see below about Orange shirt day).

Teacher Feature

Aaron Lin

Mr. Lin’s inspiration comes from his love to educate, love to see growth, and love to make an impact on students. Mr. Lin is inspired by the opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of his students. To witness the growth and progress of students, both academically and personally.

Everyday, he looks forward to educating the young minds of the future. Initially, Mr. Lin majored in accounting and accounting would be the projected career path. This dream changed when Mr. Lin took education courses as an elective while completing an Undergraduate program.

Mr. Lin grew up in New York City, New York and would love to go home and visit sometime. His parents and younger sister, still live there. He just moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, and started a family. Him and his wife welcomed a baby girl in May, her name is Sophia. Mr. Lin also has a dog, a standard poodle, and his hair colors are cream and beige.

Mr. Lin likes to spend time outdoor with his family. He likes to hike all over B.C. especially Garibaldi Provincial Park. On a typical Sunday, he would go for a stroll in a park with his family and order take outs for dinner. He does not like Hawaiian pizza and sour patch kids. However, he loves cats, but he is allergic to them!

Mr. Lin currently teaches our students in class Hemlock.

Annual General Meeting

Please note the Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday October 4, 2023

at 7pm. There are Director's positions open on the Board and we invite parents and community members to submit Statements of Interest in serving on the Board.

This is the perfect opportunity to have a say in the direction and policies of the school and have a positive impact.

The Board encourages families to participate in this once a year event to become more familiar with how the school works and how the Board operates.

Loon Lake trip

Our grade 6, 7 & 8 students had a great time at Loon Lake. Located in Maple ridge, Loon Lake Lodge & Retreat Centre offers corporate retreats, wellness weekends and youth school groups a nature-based destination that's less than an hour from Vancouver.

They enjoyed state-of-the-art lodging facilities and wonderful meals prepared by chefs at the restaurant on site. During free time, there was a great deal of reading, playing board games, and even more laughter.

During the three day camp, our students were able to experience the following activities:

orienteering
archery
canoeing
survival skills
climbing wall
low ropes course

Each member of the class was able to try new things and step out of their comfort zone to do so. Thank you for your partnership in making this trip happen. We had great bonding moments as a class and had many positive experiences being out in nature. The weather was also on our side for the entirety of the trip which was an added bonus.

Open House

On Friday October 6, 2023, Choice School will be offering an Open House for any prospective families. An Open house is an ideal opportunity for any family to come into the school and see how we operate. This Open House will include a tour, given by our students, and then a chat with the Principal to discuss possible enrollment.

Refreshments will be offered.

If you know of any families that are thinking of Choice School as a possible choice, please ask them to call the office so that we can register them for a tour.

Choice School gardens

During the summer, the Choice garden has been looked after by many of our parent (and grandparents) volunteers. The volunteers came regularly and helped with watering and weeding the vegetable garden. The result is a beautiful array of flowers and vegetables for us all to enjoy.

We thank these volunteers, as without their time and effort, all the vegetables would simply dry out. We also have a great plan to keep this part of Choice School up and running and are looking foreword to start the seeding process all over again in the spring.

Terry Fox Run

Choice School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Wednesday October 4, 2023.

All the students will be joining in and running, walking, jogging etc. to raise money for cancer research. We invite all parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles to join us in the Terry Fox Run. Your children will be so happy to see you join them.

Orange Shirt day

The annual Orange Shirt Day on opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. At Choice, we will be wearing orange on October 3 in acknowledgement.

On Tuesday October 3, please wear orange in acknowledgement of this.

Over the course of the past three weeks, we have noticed that parents drop of students at various times ranging from 8:20 am to 9:00 am. While we understand that lateness cannot be avoided at times, it is important that students arrive in time to get to their classrooms for the 8:30 start.

We would like to remind parents that school starts at 8:30 am. We ask that you arrive at 8:20, at which time our staff will be waiting at the gate to greet students.
