DECEMBER 13 th 2024

SHN  was thrilled to welcome Scarborough Centre MPP @davidsmithmpp, Scarborough North MPP @mpp.raymondcho, Agincourt MPP @arisbabikianmpp, and Rouge Park MPP @vijaythanigasalam to announce the Ontario government's investment of nearly $15 million to add 27 new hemodialysis stations at SHN's General and Centenary Hospitals. This expansion is game-changing for our Regional Nephrology Program, which is the largest in the province and offers hemodialysis treatment for more than 6,000 patients every year.

We thank the province and look forward to continuing to work closely with our government partners to expand access to leading healthcare services for #ScarbTO.

EX19.6 - Assessment of Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) Adaptive Reuse & Next Steps

Hello Scarborough, Mayor, City Councillors & City RAs,

City Staff in a report to the Executive Committee have stated the demolition of the SRT elevated portion 2018 estimated costs are $175 M which will increase significantly in 2025. Scarborough residents are asking for more study and consultation on alternative future uses to be done before demolition.

University of Toronto Scarborough, Scarborough Community Renewal Organization (SCRO) as well as a number of Scarborough Community Associations and residents, have been working on exciting possibilities for use of the SRT Corridor including the raised portion between Midland/Ellesmere to the east side of McCowan. Data has been collected to support a Scarborough Skyway and further discussion is required.

On Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at the Executive Committee, the assessment of the SRT adaptive reuse and next steps was discussed. Six (6) Scarborough residents deputed and a motion was passed with five recommendations. Here are supportive points for re-using the SRT Corridor including the raised portion:

The Scarborough Skyway would provide a fully off-street pedestrian and cycling pathway to connect Scarborough neighbourhoods

- connect to local businesses, Meadoway Trail, Scarborough Rail Trail, Toronto Zoo, Rouge National Urban Park, etc

- allow access at the Midland/Ellesmere former station for residents in northeast Scarborough to amenities and businesses south of the 401

- support City’s Transform TO and congestion management goals

The Scarborough Skyway would provide communities with greenspace and public realm amenity space

- build parkland and trails for the many residents of the intensified Scarborough Civic Centre condominium developments

- lend itself to small business, art installations, local artisans, pops, etc.

- become a destination for local residents, GTA residents, and tourists

The Scarborough Skyway would serve as a safe active transportation corridor,

- connect safely to the new Town Centre Scarborough Subway Station on the east side of McCowan

- provide safe pedestrian and cycling access in an area of Toronto that needs alternatives to vehicle transportation.

EX19.6 will be presented at the City Council and Residents are encouraged to attend the City Council meeting at City Hall on either December 17,18,or 19, 2024.

These recommendations need to pass to allow for further study and consultation on this project that is at its beginning stage and on which many in Scarborough are willing to work.

SUN also requests everyone to connect with our Mayor & Councillor before December 17, 2024 with your suggestions and thoughts on the recommendations put forth by the Executive Council regarding the Assessment of the Scarborough Rapid Transit Adaptive Reuse and Next Steps.

Don't forget to post & share with Family, Friends, Neighbours & Small Business owners!

Hello Scarborough,

We all need to let our Mayor, City & Scarborough Councillors know now, how we (Scarborough Residents) feel that we may be denied the opportunity to re-develop, gentrify & invigorate our Scarborough.

The SRT (Scarborough Skyway) will provide a fully off-street pedestrian and Cycling Pathway to connect Scarborough neighbourhoods, provide communities with Greenspace and public realm amenity space, and serve as a Safe Active Transportation Corridor.

The SRT Corridor is a critical link connecting neighbourhoods. Let’s not lose sight of an asset that would “open up” Scarborough and benefit all who live here, visit here and explore here! Much more community consultation, and study is essential to this “future use” before Demolition
