We are so pleased to share several accomplishments of our department faculty and students during the past few months. Key among them include:

FACULTY AWARDS AND PROMOTIONS

Dr. Monica Gentili recognized with UofL’s Provost’s Award

This annual award to recognize an Exemplary Director of Graduate Studies honors those who have graduate or professional student advising and/or administrative duties for their graduate program and who excel at the work of advising graduate students in areas such as program requirements, career prospects and funding possibilities.

Dr. Gentili has served as the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) for Industrial Engineering for just two years, but she has been instrumental in improving the student experience, from recruitment to graduation. More: https://louisville.edu/graduate/faculty-staff/faculty-awards

Dr. Lihui Bai promoted to full professorship

Dr. Bai has been with the IE department since 2010 and currently serves as the Director of the MSIE program, and Co-Directors of two UofL Centers (LoDI and CORE 4.0). She has graduated 8 PhD (5 more in progress) and 14 MS students, and mentored several UG students. She has authored or co-authored nearly 30 journal papers, 2 book chapters, and 22 papers in conferences proceedings. She has also served as PI or Co-PI on 26 different research projects, totaling approximately $5 million, from a variety of agencies including the US Economic Development Agency, NSF, Federal Highway Administration, and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Dr. Bai is an active member of IISE and INFORMS.

IE Faculty receive Best Paper Awards

Dr. Faisal Aqlan co-authors Best Track Paper (3^rd Place) in Work Systems Division at the 2023 IISE Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The paper is titled, ‘A Virtual Reality based Digital Twin for Real-Time Monitoring and Control of Networked Manufacturing Systems'.

Dr. Pratik Parikh co-authors the Best Application Paper in the 2022 IISE Transactions Focus Issue on Operation Engineering and Analytics. The paper is titled, ‘Inpatient Discharge Planning under Uncertainty’. The authors in order are Dr. Maryam Khatami, Dr. Michelle Alvarado, Dr. Nan Kong, Dr. Pratik Parikh, and Dr. Mark Lawley.

Abigail Christmas (IE Sophomore) awarded the IISE-SHS Scholarship

Valerie Tran (IE senior) is a 2023 KY Derby Festival Princess

Zhabih Ghelichi, PhD receives 3rd place in Pritzker Doctoral Dissertation Competition

Team of Dalton Sparks and Khalid Bello placed 3^rd in the Best Student Paper Competition at IISE – Work Systems Division; they also won 1st and 2nd place in the 2023 Innovative Design Competition

Christian Zuniga (PhD student) awarded a NSF Travel Award to present his work at the 2023 International Advanced Manufacturing Conference

Sumit Paul (PhD student) awarded NSF Travel Award to present his work at the 34th Solid Freeform Fabrication Annual Meeting to be held in Austin
