Donate A Bike and Change A Life February 2025

Our Origin Story - Blue Hannon, Executive Director

Welcome to the first edition of the Monthly Spin our newsletter designed to keep volunteers and friends of Wheels For Workers 716 informed of what's happening with our organization! Our story is a remarkable example of how a group of caring people in the community can come together to help those in need.

I sold my business and retired in 2022. While meeting with Pastor Steve Biegner of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eggertsville, I sought his counsel on my next chapter in life. He challenged me to think about what I was passionate about. I have been working on bikes since I was a teenager and have always been passionate about helping others so that made sense to me.

In March of 2022 Pastor Steve and I met with Andy Cammarata of Journey's End. I had fixed bikes for employees I hired from Journey's End so they could get back and forth to work and wanted to see if there was a greater need for this type of service. It turns out there was.

The following month, a group of volunteers came together to hash out a plan to receive donated bikes, fix them up and get them to refugees and others in need. Some folks had already been doing similar things around the community so their expertise was extremely helpful as we built our program together. We will talk more about these great volunteers every month in the volunteer profile section of this newsletter.

In the first year, we worked out of an old red shed in the back of St. Paul's and most work was done in volunteers homes. In 2022 we donated 670 bikes. In 2023 we donated 1,400 bikes and in 2024 we donated 1,800!

We now have a place to work called the Wheelhouse in the back of the Church thanks to M&T Bank and we also have a showroom to store bikes. Each of our clients receives a a helmet and lock thanks to the generosity of West Herr Auto Group.

I am so proud of our all-volunteer organization! With so much going on in the world, it may difficult to know how to help. I know that I can get up everyday and fix a bike and help one of my neighbors. I encourage you to join us and volunteer for a great cause!

Mechanic Training with Master Mechanic Anthony Chungbin

Join us most Thursdays as our Master Mechanic Anthony Chungbin provides training on how to fix bicycles. Anthony does an excellent job meeting participants where they are with their mechanical ability. He provides practical training that you can use to help yourself and Wheels For Workers 716. Please check out our Facebook Page to see the schedule of trainings and topics for the week.

Volunteers Needed!

Wheels for Workers 716 is an all-volunteer organization and we are always looking for help. You don't need to be mechanically gifted, but if you are, we can show you how to fix bikes. We also need people to pick up donated bikes, work at our events, help with social media and other opportunities not listed. Call our number (716) 218-8543 or send us an email

Why I Volunteer!

Name: John Alduino

How did you get involved?

Blue Hannon is a friend of my wife Amy. We met at a retirement party and the next day I was sorting bikes and then we delivered bikes to Journey's End and I was hooked!

What do you like most out of volunteering?

Volunteering for Wheels for Workers 716 gives me a sense of purpose and the feeling I am doing something good for someone else. I have also met a ton of great people who I now call friends.

What's One Thing People probably don't know about You?

I love taking road trips on my bike. I have cycled from Cleveland to Cincinnati a number of times, have done the Erie Canal Trail from Buffalo to Albany and last year I circled Lake Ontario.

Please share this newsletter with others so they can see the work we are doing in the community. Our goal is to get as many donated bikes fixed up and out into the community to those who need them.

Helping Our Neighbors - The Need Continues

Since our inception, we have worked with Journey's End, Buffalo International Institute, Catholic Charities and Jewish Family services to get bicycles to refugees in the Buffalo area. Our hearts are with them as they deal with some difficult issues as a result of the sudden end of federal funding. We have provided some information below on how you can help these fine organizations.

Wheels For Workers 716 continues its mission to get those in need bicycles through its other partnerships at Colored Girls Bike Too, East Side Bike Club and Gobike Buffalo and others.

Refugee Partnership's Crisis Response Fund

Recently resettled individuals and families in community are at risk. Arriving as refugees, they are now at risk due to the sudden end of federal funding. There are 731 refugees in Western New York who have arrived in the last 90 days. Now it is up to us as a community to deliver on the promise America made to those recently arrived and help to make Western New York their new home.

Whether you are able to sponsor the entire cost of a new neighbor’s resettlement, or just a fraction, every dollar raised for this cause is integral to supporting refugee resettlement in our community.
