Welcome to the Latest CLAPW Newsletter!
Before we dive into the holiday season, we wanted to share an update on what’s been happening at CLAPW. It’s hard to believe we’ll soon be gathering with family and friends to celebrate, but as they say, time marches on.
Our annual Holiday Party at the Ajax Convention Centre was a huge success, filled with laughter, good food, and great company. A heartfelt thank you to our generous sponsors: Pickering Honda, Durham Region Police Services Board, McLellan Contracting, CSN Bongard Collision Ajax, Axis Family Footcare, Steve and Amanda’s No Frills, Hub International, SP Cleaning, Buchwald Services Contracting, Jenkins Business Equipment, Fix Auto, Alliance Collision and Wendy Odell.
| | | |
And of course, this wonderful event wouldn’t happen without the dedication and energy of our dynamic volunteer duo, Sylvia Thornton and Janice Rintoul — thank you both for all that you do!
Be sure to mark your calendars for November 29th — the Advocates Alliance Group will be hosting a Maker’s Market at Dowty from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

End the Wait for Supports and Services
Over 53,000 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ontario are waiting for the vital services they need to live safely, with dignity, and as part of their communities.
This crisis didn’t happen overnight—over 30 years of chronic underfunding have pushed developmental services to the breaking point.
By investing in developmental services, we not only support individuals, we also reduce strain on hospitals, long-term care, and shelters—helping people live where they truly belong: in community.
The time for urgent action and meaningful investment is now. Tens of thousands are still waiting for the supports they deserve. Sign this petition to alert Premier Doug Ford, Minister Parsa, Minister Bethlenfalvy, and your MPP. Together, we can end the wait. Raise your voice. Take action. Make change happen today.

SPIRIT OF SUMMER - PA DAY EDITION
Spirit of Summer PA Day:
Fun, Friends, and Fall Adventures!
| |
A little hiccup didn’t stop the fun—our Spirit of Summer PA Day on October 20th was filled with laughter, hot chocolate, and friendly competition, proving that great company always makes the day a success!
Our Spirit of Summer PA Day on October 20th was an absolute success! It was amazing catching up with everyone after not seeing one another since the summer. We spent the morning reconnecting, chatting about how the school year has been going thus far, and sharing what everyone is most looking forward to in the months ahead.
While we originally planned to head to Playdium, an unexpected transit incident meant we had to make a quick change to our plans.
| |
But in true Spirit of Summer fashion, we made the best of it and still had an incredible day together!
With the crisp fall weather, we decided to stop by Tim Horton’s to warm up with some delicious hot chocolate and then made our way over to Ajax Bowl for an afternoon full of laughter and friendly competition.
Even with a little hiccup in our plans, the same energy and summer spirit shone through. We had an amazing time together and can’t wait for the next one!

Winter Safety Tips: Staying Safe, Warm, and Upright This Season! From your Joint Health and Safety Committee
It’s that time of year again — when the air turns crisp, the snow starts to fall, and our driveways, parking lots and sidewalks become ice rinks overnight. While winter can be beautiful, it also brings its share of safety challenges. The Joint Health and Safety Committee wants to share a few helpful reminders to keep everyone safe, warm, and injury-free this season — whether you’re at work, home, or out and about.
1. Watch Your Step — Literally!
Slips, trips, and falls are the most common winter injuries, but they’re also the most preventable. Take small, careful steps and wear proper footwear with good traction (leave those smooth-soled shoes at home!). When walking outdoors, keep your hands free for balance — and resist the urge to text while you walk. If conditions are icy, use handrails where available and take it slow.
2. Dress for Success (and Warmth)
Layering is your best defense against the cold. Choose moisture-wicking base layers, warm middle layers, and a waterproof outer layer to stay comfortable and dry. Don’t forget gloves, hats, and scarves — up to 40% of body heat can be lost through your head and neck!
3. Drive Smart
Before heading out, clear snow and ice completely from your vehicle — including the roof. Give yourself extra time for travel and leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle ahead. Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials like a blanket, flashlight, snacks, and extra gloves. And remember: if the weather looks bad, sometimes the safest choice is to stay put.
4. Stay Healthy and Hydrated
Cold weather can sneak up on your energy levels. Keep hydrated (yes, even in winter!) and take regular breaks to warm up if you’re working or spending time outdoors.
5. Be a Safety Snow Hero
If you notice icy walkways, snow buildup, or unsafe conditions around your workplace, report them right away. Preventing accidents is a team effort — and a little awareness goes a long way!
So, bundle up, tread carefully, and enjoy all that winter has to offer — safely.
Stay warm and stay safe,
~ Your Joint Health and Safety Committee

Strike or no strike, adventure didn’t take a day off! This fall, the Community on Campus program found creative ways to explore, learn, and connect—turning unexpected challenges into unforgettable experiences.
Due to the recent strike at Durham College, the Community on Campus program was unable to commence as scheduled for Fall 2025. Despite this interruption, the group has remained actively engaged in a variety of meaningful recreational and educational experiences. Highlights of the fall semester so far include visits to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, local board game cafés, and Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park in Orono. These day trips have provided excellent opportunities to explore new interests, build confidence, and engage with the community.
In the coming weeks, we are looking forward to an exciting trip on the GO Train to Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto, as well as a visit to Durham College to tour the campus. We are eager for the new experiences and opportunities that the Winter 2026 semester will bring.

Introducing NextGen Fusion -
A Fresh Start for Our Younger Community!
| |
Community Connections, located at Dowty, has launched an exciting new initiative called NextGen Fusion - a Monday evening program designed specifically for youth ages 16 to 25.
As the name suggests, NextGen Fusion is all about the Next Generation - creating a space, both physically and socially, where young people can explore their independence, connect with peers, and experience their youth in a safe, supportive, and inspiring way.
Each evening begins with a shared meal. The group works together to plan, shop for, and prepare dinner - something simple yet delicious, like tacos or stir-fry. While a grocery run might not sound thrilling at first, it’s become one of the most engaging parts of the night! Navigating the aisles as a team sparks conversation, laughter, and a sense of accomplishment before heading back to the NextGen Research Kitchen to cook up their creations.
After the meal, the group heads out into the community for an activity, keeping things simple, social, and affordable, while focusing on connection and fun. Whether it’s a walk, games, or a local outing, the goal is to provide opportunities for participants to experience good food, good company, and the wider community in meaningful ways.
NextGen Fusion is more than a program, it’s an experience. It’s about discovering who you are, building friendships, and feeling part of something bigger. For our young participants, it’s quickly becoming a highlight of the week, and for us, a glimpse into the bright and promising future of the next generation.
