Governor Kehoe names alumna to serve as newest Regent at Northwest Missouri State University


Governor Michael Kehoe appointed Leisha Barry to serve on the Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents on Oct. 20, filling a seat left vacant by Roxanna Swaney.


President of Northwest Lance Tatum addressed Barry’s appointment at a committee meeting of the Regents on Oct. 21, and said the Board planned to welcome her at its upcoming meeting on Oct. 24.


Missourians encouraged to plant trees this fall to support greener communities


A portion of Nodaway County Route EE will be closed on weekdays beginning Oct. 27 through Nov. 18, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced.


The closures will occur Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Crews will close the road in sections to replace culvert tubes that carry water beneath the roadway. The work is being done in preparation for a larger resurfacing project planned along the route in 2026.

Second No Kings rally in Maryville draws crowd from across the region


Maryville's event was one of multiple across the region. Together they joined a national movement which saw millions take to streets and town squares across the country.


"Loving," "loud" "energetic," and "joyful," are how demonstrators described the crowd they formed in Maryville on Oct. 18 as part of the national No Kings movement. The event was one of the more than 2,500 demonstrations held across the country to challenge "President Trump's attempted coronation," according to the No Kings website, and it marked the second wave of a movement which first turned out in June to protest actions by the current administration.

Rental assistance program for area residents on pause during the shutdown


Hamilton Properties owns affordable housing complexes across the region and is feeling the impact of the government's closure. Meanwhile, the company is working to secure funds for renovating its Trenton Heights building.


According to Christina Ott, who works in the main office at Hamilton many of their tenants use the USDA program. The agency "pays their rent, or a portion of it," she explained. "When a tenant cant pay more than 30% of their income to rent, the USDA pays the rest."

Local Beats & Beyond

Haunted Hayrack Ride


The Essex Junior High has resurrected the Wabash Trace Haunted Hayrack Ride to raise money for their Washington, D.C. trip. Come support their efforts and get your socks scared off!


Hours will be from 7 PM - 10 PM (please be in line by 10, racks will go until everyone gets through) on Friday, October 24th and Saturday, October 25th. There will be a 'no-scare' hour from 6 PM - 7 PM on both Friday and Saturday for the little ones and faint of heart.


The ride will begin at Little Waubonsie Park/Berglund Field in Shenandoah. Please park in the parking lot accessible from Ferguson Road. Come earlier in the day and visit Beaver Bottom Family Farm!


Admission is $10 per person. Each additional time through the same night will be only $5.

Senior Night has arrived for Maryville football. The Spoofhounds face Lafayette with a chance to seal the No. 1 seed in Class 3, District 8. Bearcat Rewind


Head coach Austin Meyer has guided Northwest women's basketball to a .500 or better record four seasons in a row, the longest stretch since the late 1980s, but he has higher aspirations for the 2025-26 campaign.

Student Spotlight


Noah is a senior from outside of Omaha, Nebraska, currently pursuing a degree in Mass Media broadcasting productions with a video emphasis at Northwest Missouri State University. This semester, I’m actively involved in the morning edition of Rhythm ’n Roots and newscast reporting at KXCV/KRNW. He also producing a street variety show called ‘Staying Current’ for the student-run television station, KNWT.
