While we would normally see you during the course of the year at Aptima’s annual Tech Showcase or Soiree, I/ITSEC, or other industry events, with all not yet normal, we still want to reach out and stay in touch. Though less personal, this newsletter, “The Aptimist,” is our attempt to connect and share a bit of news with you, from innovative projects and programs that you may be involved with, to names and faces that you may—or may want to—know.
As we wish not to wear out our welcome, rest assured this newsletter will be quarterly only. And because we prefer two-way conversations, please feel free to respond here or on our social media channels with your own news and thoughts.

Aptima’s AI Co-worker “Charlie” Co-authors Book Chapter on “Unlocking Human AI Teams”
In one of the first book chapters co-authored by an artificially “intelligent worker” and its human creators, Charlie and her human co-authors explain her conception and growth, and reveal key components that have enabled her to take her place as a coworker, colleague, and collaborator.
Although embedded artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly surrounds us, Charlie's development has focused on evolving AI’s utility so that it can work more collaboratively alongside us.
AI can offer unique and surprising insights in nearly any domain, but its ”intelligence” is a type that humans are not entirely familiar or comfortable with. Charlie advances the human-AI relationship so that we can take advantage of what AI has to offer and what it has to say, and better understand its strengths and weaknesses in order to work with it.

Matching AI Adversaries to Pilot Trainees
AI pilots offer the potential of being tireless trainers that are always available to rigorously train to the curriculum. AI agents are expected to augment expert human trainers who are in limited supply and unavailable on-demand.
AFRL and Aptima are working on a system to smartly match AI adversaries to pilot trainees to improve access to and quality of simulated training. A unique feature of this new AI system will be to leverage training data in real-time. As performance measures roll in, an adaptive learning model will select the next scenario and agent that will advance the trainee to expert-level most quickly and surely. Rather than apply a traditional, one-size-fits-all approach, these models personalize learning at scale.

NETSTORM Patent Honored by Boston Patent Law Association
When we embarked on our research related to this patent, we asked two critical questions:
- How are people so good at connecting the dots between seemingly disconnected events? AND
- How are people so bad at connecting obvious causes and effects?
We then tried to understand these processes and reverse-engineer them, and in doing so we discovered a way to incorporate relational information in a more rigorous manner. Perhaps the main innovation of this patent is the discovery of a process for developing AI systems and decision aids that can not only exploit complex relational data but can adapt, shape, and proactively seek new information. These are the fundamental tenets for improving our future—helping us live, learn, communicate, and interact with each other and with the technologies of tomorrow.

Sterling Wiggins Appointed Vice President of Transformation
Aptima is pleased to announce the appointment of Sterling Wiggins to Vice President of Transformation. This new position further aligns Aptima’s companywide efforts to proactively respond to a host of disruptions that organizations are facing unlike ever before.
In his new role, Wiggins will lead and facilitate many initiatives long underway across Aptima. “Sterling is an exemplar of our company ethos, and we’re thrilled to have him take on this new role as a conductor of sorts to further align our efforts,” said Daniel Serfaty, Aptima’s Principal Founder and CEO. “Our mission today is the same as it was when we were founded 25 years ago: to improve performance in a human-centered way. But with the pace of change and disruption accelerating, there lies an opportunity to be more proactive and responsive rather than being swept along.
