Thoughts from the Corner Box
Is WWJD The Thing To Do?
I don’t like the expression ‘to be honest with you’ because I hope we are all honest with each other, and we don’t need to point it out. Still, I’m going to be honest with you: I don’t like the acronym WWJD because I’m pretty sure I don’t know what Jesus would do and given where we are in this country and the world, I don’t think most of us know what He would do.
I’ve been reading and studying the Book of Jude. Jude was Jesus’ half-brother and the brother of James, who led the Church in Jerusalem. Jude’s name was actually Judas, but to separate him from Judas Iscariot, he was later called Jude. When writing his epistle, Jude didn’t say who he was; instead, he said he was a servant of Jesus and James' brother. .Like his brother James, Jude did not believe in Jesus until after His resurrection; after that, he became a firm believer. I’m sure that even today most non-believers would believe if they saw the resurrected Savior.
If I understood what I read in the Book of Jude, he intended to write about our salvation but then realized false teachers had crept into the church, and his book is now a warning. In fact, it was an urgent warning for believers to hold fast to their faith and not fall for the false teachers’ words.
While reading the book of Jude, all I could think about was what kind of message Jude would write today. And Paul, I’d be afraid to read what Paul would have to say. Why am I saying those things? I am saying them because there are so many things being said and done in the name of Christianity that it is mind-boggling. But what is worse than mind-boggling is that so much of it has nothing to do with Christianity.
For example, people wear WWJD bracelets and pop them on their wrists when they need to think about what Jesus would do. If they are about to do something they think they shouldn’t, they pop that bracelet, and it is supposed to tell them not to do it. So, are they tied to Jesus through their wrist, or do they know Jesus in their heart? The bracelet is a cute idea, and I’m sure whoever thought of it is now driving a Lamborghini because profits are high - these things sell, but are they working?
If the bracelet were working, would we be in the shape we are in today, with this side hating that side, lies being sworn to as truth, wars being waged, children suffering from hunger and neglect, and the list is almost endless? And why do Christians need to be reminded of what Jesus would do? We should know, and we should practice it daily. We shouldn’t need to snap our wrist with a rubber-band bracelet to get back on track.
I have a better idea than wearing the WWJD bracelet. It wasn’t my idea, but nevertheless it is wonderful. Let me explain a little bit first. God is love. Without knowing God, we would not know love. God loved us so much that He gave us His only Son, who died on the cross because He loved us. We would not exist without love. Love is the key to God and Jesus. Their names are synonymous with love.
So, when you are angry, or when you want to do something you shouldn’t do, don’t wonder what Jesus would do. Throw your arm out and put your hand up and to whatever bad thought or feeling is going through your mind say…
STOP, in the name of LOVE . Because if we don’t, it will break His heart.
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7
