A Word from the Pastor

Arcadia Friends and Family,

Wayne and I are Nomads-- Methodist Nomads. What are Nomads, you ask? The best description comes from their website: Nomads are a primarily Methodist organization of retired people who travel in their RV’s, to do mission work. The Nomads do new construction, remodeling, and repairs for churches, children’s homes, camps, colleges, outreach missions, and disaster rebuilding historically for Methodist connected institutions all over the USA. “We demonstrate God’s love through our work and by listening to the people with whom we work”. As we say at home, “we are God’s hands and feet”.

You might remember this past spring, our first trip was to Southern Illinois to work at Little Grassy, a United Methodist Church camp. One of the many jobs we did was cleaning out an ancient and giant burn pile to separate metal to be sold for scrap and the rest moved to a new pile to burn. We sorted out parts of an old piano (boy, do they have lots of wires-I mean strings) auto parts, bed springs, and you name it, then pitched them in the back of a big old dump truck. We also made 10 wooden picnic tables and built a deck ...among other jobs. It was physically hard but rewarding work. And the added bonus...it’s nice to visually see the result of your work.

For our second trip, we left Halloween morning (this morning), to travel to Ashville NC to work on flood victim’s homes. The campground where we will stay starting Saturday is in the church yard of Covenant Community Church (a United Methodist Church) in Ashville. We will be staying in the Scotty, our 2004 Newmar Scottsdale motorhome, pulling Jenny, my gray duck-adorned jeep. We will park the camper and travel to the work sites, which may be anywhere from 15-45 minutes away.

As you might realize, when you are traveling in a motorhome one doesn’t just zoom down the interstate weaving in and out of cars and trucks. Or zip around fast food drive throughs or gas stations-- it’s slow going. Even slower when you miss a turn.

So... we were on our way to our over-night stop outside Cooksville TN. It was tedious driving; climbing higher and higher, around one hairpin curve after the other--Jenny, barely hanging on for dear life. When all the sudden the GPS is telling us to make a U-turn!

What? Where? One doesn’t make U-turns in a motorhome pulling a jeep, nor do you pull in and back up. She tried to have us turn down gravel roads, most of which were marked,” not an exit/dead end”. Finally, she directed us to an old cemetery perched on the side of a steep hill--but you could clearly see a gravel road circling the perimeter. The first problem was getting the Scotty under the low arched sign at the entrance to the cemetery. Wayne crept under very slowly and we made it without scraping the air conditioner off or getting one scratch on the top!

Then, we finally got back on the right road. However, talk about rural.....we were out in the “sticks”. If you’ve seen the movie Deliverance, you might have recognized the banjo’s playing in the distance! But the scenery..... when we finally reached our destination, the views made all the problems so worth it! God’s handiwork is so very evident in the breath-taking views.

Wayne and I are very excited to be part of God’s church reaching out to those in need and are very fortunate to be part of Arcadia Church who sees the benefits of sending folks out to be his hand and feet. Wayne and I are so blessed...and we are already being rewarded by the beauty of his creation.

Blessings, Pastor Sherry

Study Groups

Our current Bible Study of Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible will finish on November 6. We've had 12 participants with great discussion as we gain new insights on Bible passages.

We will begin a short 3 week study on The Purpose of Christmas by Rick Warren. It will begin on November 13, Thursday mornings, at 10:00. We will skip Thanksgiving Day and finish on December 4. This is a wonderful short book full of meaning, discovery, and heartfelt messages.

Support for Young People

Gooya! A creative way to connect with Middle Schoolers and families is going strong. The kids are so excited when they come to our lot to be picked up and realize that they get a treat! This week it was hot chocolate, perfect for a cold rainy day!!!

One good thing that came from Back to School/Church Sunday was that 14 school age children associated with our church received Bible Story books.

We continue to support our children with Children's Church each Sunday, except communion Sunday when they can participate with their families.

Support from Our Care Team

Our Care Team delivers communion to our shut ins and anyone else that can't make it to church. Thanks Sherry, Gayle, Larry, BJ, Mary and Kevin.

PCM Sunday (Every First Sunday)

A full box of food items was delivered to PCM from our monthly collection. The food items are badly needed. We collect anytime, but especially the first Sunday of the month.

Supporting the Community

The Cinnamon Sisters will be assisting two families for Thanksgiving dinners by providing food gift cards.

Pet Blessing

Our Pet Blessing Day was a joy to share with others the special blessing of our pets. A donation was collected for the McCracken County Humane Society.

Welcome Visitors

The Disciple Now Committee has a new bag to give visitors that come to church. It will contain a letter to them from Sherry, a newsletter, an Upper Room, the history of the church, and a dozen cinnamon rolls. We are asking the ushers, or anyone available, to see that a visitor receives a bag. The frozen rolls are in the freezer in the furnace room.

Important Dates

All Saints Sunday will be November 2 when we remember any members that have passed away this last year. We will be remembering Jeanne Bone this year

Hoping food can arrive shortly before 10:00.

November 8

Arcadia will be serving approximately 100 people at the Family Kitchen at the Holy House of Prayer downtown on November 8. There is a sign up sheet for volunteers in the back of the church to bring food, help serve, or both. Thanks for all the wonderful volunteers. It will be a blessing for you.

It could be casseroles, muffins, pastries, fruit, donuts, etc. We will be serving about 40-50 from lifeline as well as our own congregation. It will be a great opportunity to serve our brothers and their families and support their walk as a Christian.

December 14 Musical Program

On December 14 we look forward to a special music program that Gaye has been working up with the choir and all kids! We look forward to that so much!!!

The Recap | Episode 30

Thoughts from the Corner Box

To my Arcadia Family,

I hope this note finds you well. I’m grateful to say I’m finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel, and I’ve felt your prayers every step of the way. Thank you for lifting me up.

Many of you have been meeting with Amanda Crice, the Chaplain of Discernment and Innovation at TWK UMC. I haven’t been able to attend myself, but I understand Amanda’s role is to help us take a good, honest look at who we are—our strengths, our struggles—and help us go forward. To me, her help is a gift, but it’s only useful if we receive it.

The truth is, our future can be bright or bleak, and that depends on us. I’ve been part of Arcadia long enough to know how faithful, generous, and hardworking this church family is. We’ve weathered storms together. We’ve celebrated together. But lately, I’ve noticed something that’s hard to ignore: our attendance is way down. There are Sundays when the choir outnumbers the congregation. That’s not a criticism—it’s a concern. And it’s a question: Why?

I know life gets complicated. I know there are real struggles, and I’m not here to dismiss anyone’s pain or responsibilities. I’ve been there, and I am currently in a situation of my own. But when I stand in our sanctuary, I can remember what it felt like when the pews were full—not just with people, but with energy, with devotion, with love for the Lord and for each other. And then I remember: the church isn’t the building. It’s not the preacher. It’s not the programs. It’s us. You. Me. All of us who choose to show up.

These are critical times for churches everywhere, and Arcadia is no exception. On a good Sunday, we have twenty-six people in the pews—including the choir. That’s hard to see week after week. I’m not writing this to guilt anyone. I’m writing because I care. I want a future that’s full of life and light. I want people to drive by and see a parking lot that says, Something good is happening here.

Being a Christian isn’t just about what we say—it’s about what we do. And the same goes for our church. Saying we love our church is one thing. Showing up is another.

So I’m asking, from a place of love: come back. Come home. We miss you. We need you. And I believe God still has work for us to do—together.

With love and hope,

Sandy Mayhugh

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24–25

Are you a longtime member of Arcadia or are you new to our church community? If you have memories or thoughts you would like to share, it would be great if you would write a paragraph or two, or even a few lines, that we can publish in our newsletter in the coming months. Throughout the coming year, we hope to bring our members closer through this sharing.

Our Vision

Arcadia will be a church where everyone grows as a disciple of Christ and helps others become disciples, all walking the discipleship pathway together.

The members of Arcadia UMC are actively engaged in working to fulfill our mission. All are welcome to join us. We look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday!
