The holidays are revved up at our Thrift Shop. We started late last month with Halloween as members Ellen Dihel and Mitzi Murphy and community volunteer Dawn Torres spread service and shared their Halloween spirit. Next up is Christmas; we have a big Christmas Work Party scheduled for November 6 and 7. Details of this and more in this edition of the Assistant League of Hawaii Newsletter. |

When We Give Thanks

Thanks to our program chairs and committee members for helping to get programs up and running again. Despite changes to social interaction because of COVID-19, we have been able to kick-start Operation School Bell, We Care, Share, Outreach and hopefully Operation Wildlife in January. Our programs are impacting the community and Hawaii's children.
Our regular clientele has blessed the Thrift Shop with their purchases and helped add to the funds for our upcoming programs. We continue to follow safe practices at the Thrift Shop, and despite our shorter hours of operation, they continue to regularly visit and buy.
It looks like we once again will be able to meet in person in November. Our hospitality team is working on a fun shopping and luncheon experience at the store for Christmas items on November 10. Please see information on the upcoming lunch in this Newsletter.
Finally, we are thankful for our members who give of their time to make everything work, both upstairs and down, in Hawaii and on the Mainland.

It’s an In-Person Luncheon for our November 10 Regular Meeting |

You're invited to join us at the Thrift Shop on Wednesday, November 10 at 10:30 a.m. for our first Regular Meeting since May 2021.
Our Hospitality Committee will have socially-distanced table seating both upstairs and downstairs for a delicious sandwich and salad lunch. Cost will be $10.
Please RSVP to Assistance League of Hawaii at althrift281@gmail.com by November 5th so we can make plans. A short meeting with a few business items will be held.
It just so happens that day is the first day that members can purchase Christmas items, so please plan to browse the store and do a little shopping. Parking on site will be limited, so please be aware you may need to use street parking. Plan on wearing a mask while shopping; once seated, you can of course take your mask off.
For mainland members and those who cannot attend, we will plan a Zoom link so you can virtually enjoy the festivities.
Save the Date: Christmas Fun at Laurelyn Berger’s on Wednesday, December 8 at 10:30 a.m. White Elephant presents and more fun will be in store. Please mark your calendars now to reserve your day to join in holiday spirit.

KWAK Generates More
Than $4,000 in Donations
|

Assistance League of Hawaii finished among the Top 100 participating non-profits at the recently concluded Give Aloha 2021 program sponsored by Foodland and Western Union.
Donations to Assistance League of Hawaii through Give Aloha were $3,796.00, with an additional gift from Foodland and Western Union of $915.73. The total came out to be $4,711.73. An additional donation of $100 was also added to the total bringing the grand total for KWAK (Kokua With Aloha Kala) to $4,811.73.
On behalf of Assistance League of Hawaii, the Resource Development Committee sends our "aloha" and "mahalo" to our member volunteers and community supporters.

November Update for Programs |

OPERATION SCHOOL BELL®
Operation School Bell® is going to have a “packing party” on Wednesday, November 17 at 9 a.m. upstairs in the Ohana Room. We’re going to need many of you who have volunteered in the past for Operation School Bell.
We’re going to be packing 40 emergency boxes for Title 1 schools, mainly for students who have “accidents” while at school and may need a change of clothing. They will be able to keep the items we are providing them, which are slippers, shorts, underwear, and t-shirts. We also need volunteers to take the packed boxes to the local schools. We’d love to have you join the packing party. Interested?

As the schools deplete their boxes, Operation School Bell will replenish them with requested items. This will become an ongoing event and we’re all excited for this new adventure. Thanks for helping: the more the merrier.
WE CARE
Youth Outreach - The We Care Committee purchased over $800 worth of travel size and full size personal hygiene products (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash), canned fruit, meat products, diapers, and trash bags.
Mary Monohon and Linda Tsark delivered the items to the Youth Outreach Center located in Waikiki. They were given a tour of the facilities and an overview of the services provided to homeless teens. We left feeling our Assistance League of Hawaii funds were well spent supporting this worthwhile and important program. Slippers are coming in mid-November to fill the order placed in September by Alika Campbell.
In October, Pat Dixon delivered $127 in household goods to one client at Hale Kipa.
Lullaby Layettes - Mary Kay Junk hosted a layette packing party at her home in Kailua on Monday, October 25th. Those in attendance included Pat Dixon, Jane Winslow, Ku’ulei Pai, Vicki Fay, Linda Tsark, Johanna Leiato, Helen Taufa’asau, and Betty Parinas. Vicki’s friend Sharon Dellinger also helped with preparations by folding hundreds of onesies. In total, layettes were packed for 106 girls and 113 boys and will be delivered to Castle, Kapiolani, Kaiser and Wahiawa hospitals.
Thank you to the chairpersons and volunteers who contribute to the success of our programs.

Our Action Plan for 2021 – 2022 |
|
All of our members are involved in developing our Action Plan by attending evaluation meetings in March of each year. These meetings give Assistance League of Hawaii the ability to incorporate your relevant ideas into our plans.
I want to thank all of our members who participated in our evaluations in March 2021. We received positive feedback on the actions we took during COVID-19. The year presented our members many opportunities that may not have been available during normal times.

The Membership Committee is working with the Marketing and Communications Committee to improve our member webpage, where we will have pictures and information about our newest members and community volunteers. Our first installation will include new members who joined this year. |

Getting the Word Out Through Our Platforms |
|
We are still working on our goal to post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter everyday. Thanks to all of those that are posting, giving us ideas, and taking pictures.
Our top Facebook post last month was on October 14th, “Back by popular demand, this Saturday marks the return of the $2 clothing rack! Come on down to our shop on Young Street where one person’s donation could be your next treasure!"
Our social media platforms reached 238 people with a high number of reactions and shares too. Posts regarding the new Bid Box, our updated Assistance League of Hawaii cover photo, and new Halloween items also had a high number engagements. We encourage everyone to “like” us on Facebook and “share” posts with family and friends.
In late October we established the Assistance League of Hawaii page on Nextdoor. Some of you may be familiar with Nextdoor as a way to stay in touch with your neighborhood and the local businesses. Having a business on Nextdoor is a bit different, so we are on a learning curve.
Lastly we re-established our presence on Instagram. Check out our new Instagram page. Like and share our posts. Follow us on Instagram and we’ll follow you back.
Following a discussion and decision by the Board, we have now created a New Member webpage. It is a work in progress that will be activated for the members soon.

Thrift Shop Revs Up For the Holidays |
|
We are making progress getting ready for our Christmas Work Party. The Craft table has been cleared in the OSB room. A big chunk of our crafts were put on sale for a week. Most of our furniture was purchased during the sale. Housewares are on sale until Saturday, November 6. We will have more room to get organized.
Students from Farrington and McKinley High Schools will be helping us again this year. Many members also signed up to help on Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7. We will be organized in small groups in different parts of the store.
The refrigerator needs to be cleared. Please check to see if you have something there that can be removed. We will need space on Sunday, November 7 for our pot-lock lunch.
Should someone contact you about a large donation or furniture, please check with Nancy Sparacino or me before accepting. Once the Christmas items are displayed, there won’t be much room for furniture for a week or two.
We will be closed on Thursday, November 25 in observance of Thanksgiving Day.
Be sure to check our website, Facebook, Instagram and your email to see pictures and announcements of our sales. Our photographers are doing a terrific job. Be sure to “like” and “share” our posts.
We had a good October. Our 50% off sale on housewares pushed our sales totals for the last Saturday of the month to $3,964.00. Thrift Shop sales for the month were $26,600. Thank you all for a wonderful October.

Donating a New iMac to the
Boys and Girls Club of Waianae
|
|
Recently, Assistance League of Hawaii members visited the Boys and Girls Club of Waianae to deliver an iMac computer and iCloud subscription for use by the students in their digital classes. Technology teacher and graduate of the Searider Foundation program, Tim Bradley, was so thankful for the equipment which introduces students to still and video techniques. Students develop early interest which will feed into the award-winning program at Waianae High school, Seariders Foundation. Interim clubhouse director Krystle Jury-Hale, stated that this was the first new computer Tim had ever been given.
There are plans to deliver children's clothing and toys to the Boys and Girls Club in Waianae through our Share program.
