September required us to settle back into our routines as summer ended and children went back to school. Although COVID-19 rearranged some of those everyday activities, please remember why you joined Assistance League. We need each of you to continue to give of your time and volunteer in some small way to our chapter. I am hoping that the timing is right for you to help.
Last month we asked you to donate to “Give Aloha”, Foodland’s fundraiser that brings additional monies to our organization. Thanks to each of you that participated and for the great efforts of Resource Development committee members. If you were with us for our last member meeting you saw the fun and passion these members had. Please see Gloria McGehee-Koel’s article under Resource Development for details.
A big thank you to Doris Hillhouse a friend of Peggy Monell’s for once again donating to our chapter. She loves what we do and because of that passion, she has gifted Operation School Bell with $10,000. Thank you, Doris!
If you are not sure where you can help in our chapter, please reach out to one of our board members. Working together is such a rewarding part of the whole Assistance League of Hawaii experience and we have lots to do! Programs will be taking place this year - maybe in a different format - and we will need you!. Please see Miho Teipel’s article on just what our programs have been doing. Just take the next step and ask where you can help. Get involved!
The next few meetings will probably be electronic. However, in December, we will hopefully be meeting in person on December 8th for our Christmas coffee at Laurelyn Berger’s, so please save the date. In the meantime, if you still need a short lesson on Zoom, please reach out to me either at the shop 946-1505 or by email althrift281@gmail.com and we can set a convenient time to meet one-on-one to install and tweak this fun way of communicating.

What is GuideStar, and why is it important to the Assistance League of Hawaii?
GuideStar collects, organizes, and presents information about nonprofit organizations. The Assistance League of Hawaii is one of the thousands of nonprofit organizations globally that participated with the GuideStar organization for many years. As a result, GuideStar provides information such as the Assistance League's vision and mission, the impact of the Philanthropic program, the local reputation, finances, governance, and more.

The most significant value of the information collected about the Assistance League is that it helps donors and organizations funding grants learn about Assistance League's fantastic work. GuideStar helps donors make educated decisions to fund nonprofits, builds connections, and allows the Assistance League to network with donors and others in achieving Assistance League's mission of transforming the lives of children and adults in our greater community.
GuideStar is a way to showcase our programs and support Assistance League's funding and exposure. The Guidestar logo and link appears at the bottom of every page (in the black area) of our website.

OPERATION SCHOOL BELL®: Chair: Laurelyn Berger and Vice-Chair Andrea Cyriacks. Operation School Bell will be doing emergency boxes for some of the Title I schools and will need help getting these boxes together at a future time and date. Operation School Bell will also be needing help transferring the boxes to local schools.
WE CARE: A big mahalo nui loa to Chair Paula Allen and Vice-Chair Linda Tsark who stepped up to lead We Care. Over $400 worth of diapers and household goods were dropped off to the Domestic Violence Action Center by Paula Allen. Bus passes may be provided to them in the future.
On October 25th, there will be a layette packing party at Mary Kay Junk's house in Kailua at 9 a.m. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Mary Kay at (808) 254-2607.

Implementing Your Suggestions |

The Strategic Planning Committee is working on our action plan for 2021 - 2022. I wanted to thank all our members for participating in last year's evaluations. We are excited to be implementing many of your ideas and suggestions in the upcoming months.

Layette Basket Prep & More |

Hi! I'm Paula Allen, and I'm the new We Care Chairman. It's time again to have the layette basket stuffing event at Mary Kay Junk's home. It will be held on Monday, October 25th at 9 am. Come and join the fun. We'd love to see you.
Here's an update on the Domestic Violence Action Center. We are still providing household supplies and diapers, but our challenge is to find a new type of transportation pass. Got any ideas.? Have a Happy October!

You Can Help With Our Social Media |

The Marketing Committee has a goal to post social media content as often as possible to our various platforms. This will encourage customers to frequently visit the sites, make purchases at the Thrift Shop, donate to the organization and get people interested in volunteering.
In September a near-daily countdown for the Give Aloha program was implemented on Facebook. This was an excellent reminder for those that did not log on everyday.
Lisa Nay and Reiko Striver are also doing a great job posting to our Facebook page. They posts pictures of new items for sale in the Thrift Shop. As you know, we have some very popular items and this is another way to showcase the Thrift Shop. Posted items have included furniture, a doll house, jewelry items, kitchenware and many others.
Help is needed from all Assistance League of Hawaii member volunteers. Our website administrator Melvin Ah Ching can set you up to be a regular poster to not only our Facebook site, but also to Twitter and maybe to Instagram and Tik Tok. National says that video content is king and more interactive. If you love shooting short form video, talk to us!
1) Content rules! Photos and videos are worth a thousand words. You also have to write less with visual content. We welcome any and all ideas, big or small, behind the scenes, etc. Let us know.
2) Like us on Facebook. When you are on Facebook, please respond to all Assistance League of Hawaii posts with a “like” or a kind comment. Our site can become a top Thrift Shop search item the more “Likes” we have. Be sure to follow our page and hit the share button to post to your own newsfeed. Let your friends and relatives know about us.
New Volunteer Opportunity for High School Students
Letters were sent to two high schools, McKinley and Kaimuki, offering community service hours for students to help meet high school/college application requirements. Students working with us will help with donation management and preparing items for sale in our Thrift Shop. In addition, students could also provide customer service in our Thrift Shop.
We have already heard back from McKinley and look forward to coordinating this opportunity!

Bid Box Online, Locks, Media & Holidays |

As we all know, our Bid Box generates a lot of income for our Thrift Shop.
This month we have taken another step and made bidding on the items available by email. We will see how well this option works. Items that receive NO bids are then placed on the floor at a price lower than the opening bid. Jewelry, receiving NO bids, is placed in our safe to be put out again at a later date. Thanks to Margie and the “Bid Box Crew”. They not only do the research on items but they also lovingly set up the attractive displays. This is followed by phone calls notifying the winners and the careful wrapping of items. Lots of work !!! Great job ladies.
A word of caution to members working in the shop after the store has closed. Please be sure to lock the front door when you go to the parking lot to help someone to bring things into the shop or to bring your car into the lot. Last week someone entered (there were several members present) because the door was not locked. He left when spotted and it was not serious but the message is to be aware and very careful.
If you have checked our web site lately you will have noticed stunning pictures and comments about items for sale in the shop. Thanks to Lisa Nay, Reiko Stiver, Isobel Schaefer, Ku’ulei Pai and Melvin Ah Ching for doing the “magic” necessary to post on Facebook. One customer even takes pictures of items he has bought in the shop and creates greeting cards.
A gentle reminder about “chatting” – it’s great to engage in conversations with our customers but not when there is a line of customers waiting to pay. When we talk to each other while working – our voices carry and everyone can hear.
Christmas is coming and surely you have seen all the full bins in the workroom. We have set Sunday, November 7 as our “Holiday Workday Party” – mark your calendar now. Hopefully the virus will cooperate and we can have a large group.
The Thrift Shop continues to do very well thanks to all of you who so generously give of your time and talent.
