Racing to start the Indy Autonomous Challenge with Deep Orange
The race cars for the Indy Autonomous Challenge are on their way to the starting line.

We met with graduate students from the Deep Orange accelerated concept development program at Clemson University this month to build the first modified Dallara race cars that will autonomously compete head-to-head later this year at the world's most famous race track — the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Qualification races for teams of college students from around the world continue in simulation through the end of May. Those that survive the digital proving ground will earn a fully automated race car and a chance to prove their autonomous driving software on the track in October. The winning team will take home $1 million.

Hexagon's Autonomy and Positioning division worked with the Deep Orange team to design the reference vehicle that all student teams will use in the race, and we're contributing to the challenge with integration services from AutonomouStuff and precise GNSS positioning systems from NovAtel.

Many more autonomous race cars are scheduled to be built at the AutonomouStuff integration shop in the coming months, before the checkered flag drops on a driverless race in October.

Catch a glimpse of the action from the Indianapolis build in this video shot with the Deep Orange crew.
New product: Luminar Hydra
Luminar built lidar from the chip-level up to meet the stringent performance and safety requirements of the industries they serve, from safety and security to autonomous applications.

Luminar’s Hydra lidar sensor uses a single 1550nm fiber laser to provide long range and high point density performance under all conditions — including direct sunlight, rain, snow, fog and other challenging weather conditions.

With camera-like resolution up to 200 points per square degree and high data fidelity, Hydra reliably sees where objects are, even small or dark objects at long distance.
Key specifications include:

500m max range, configurable scan settings
●     250m at <10% reflectivity
●     Ground and Freespace: 80m
●     Small Obstacle Detection: 150m
●     Objects and Vehicles: 250m
120° field of view, high data fidelity
●     30° dynamic vertical field of view
●     1 cm range precision
●     High-precision reflectance
Robust environmental standards
●     Dust & Water Ingress: IP67
