The Final Days at the Current Location
As of April 30th, Caring Palms will stop doing oiled massages. This includes Swedish, Deep Tissue, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, and the popular Freeform. We will continue to do Myofascial Release (MFR), Reiki, Mediumship, Meditation, White Light, and other energy modalities as well as teach classes in many things..
For those that have gift certificates for massage that have not been used (and there are some that date back 5 – 7 years), they will be honored for Myofascial Release (MFR) or Reiki sessions only. If this does not work for you, we are sorry as there will be no refunds. This is because most unused gift certificates were purchased a minimum of six months ago with the majority of them purchased over 18 months ago.

Referring Out
Since Caring Palms will no longer be doing regular, oiled massage, I am listing two people here that I am referring people to. I have done trades with both of them, and have been satisfied. (And if I think they're good enough to work on me, they are good.) Keep in mind, they are not me. They have their own styles, own methods. But they each do a good job. They are...

Payment Made, Lease Signed
Caring Palms is looking forward to moving into the new space at 315 10th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach inside Shine Wellness’ additional building. To accomplish this, there will be no appointments booked for the month of May. Booking will be available in June as soon as we can get approval from the state and city. Classes scheduled in May will take place at the current studio on the dates and times they are set for. (The place may be fairly empty, but the classes will take place.)
Those that have bought furniture, lamps and other things can pick them up anytime after April 30th, Just call to arrange a time. Also, if what you bought is large or heavy, bring someone along to help you lift and move it. (Back issues is the main reason for the change in the first place.)

Website Changes
Because of the changes in services, the Caring Palms' website will be changing. The changes have been made locally for the full website, and will be moved out to the web on May 1st. When going to the site, you might need to refresh your browser screen to get the newer pages. (About 95% of site works and has been tested on a local computer. The rest of the testing will happen once the site goes live as there are some things that do not work unless the files are sitting in the cloud. So if you find links that do not work, please let us know.) The mobile website will take longer and changes can not be made until May as each change to that site goes live instantly. All the text needed has been created in a Word document, so it should mostly be a matter of copying and pasting with some logistical things to figure out.
The new site will better represent what Caring Palms does as far as services, classes, and other things. The menu across the top has been changed to reflect this showing Services, Continuing Ed, Classes, Mediumship, Meditation along with some of the ones it has now like T-Shirts, Our Studio, Events, Contact, and Links.
It should make it easier to find what you are looking for.

Featured Shirt of the Month
Since people do not see the t-shirt designs too often, a new shirt will be featured each month.

Selfishness or Selflessness?
By Brian Dean
For the most part, we tend to be fairly selfless beings. We care about others, whether that be family, friends, coworkers, or just people in general. We make sure the needs of the family are met, there’s food on the table, there’s a roof over their heads. That is care and dedication.
The same is true for meeting expectations at work. We do the best we can to make sure projects are done on time, to treat everyone properly, coworkers, employees, managers. That too is care and dedication. So why do we feel selfish when we take time for ourselves?
We give and give. Don’t we deserve something back? Aren’t we worth the same amount and care, love, and consideration that we give others? The true answer to that is… YES.
We feel ourselves to be that granite obelisk, something standing tall that nothing can affect. We are strong, and there is no end to this strength. We can be that stoic object that everyone can come to for support. And that is fine, for a while. But even rock weathers over time. It starts to crack, to chip, eventually crumble. No matter how strong you think you are, the same happens to you.
Without some type of self care, anyone will eventually break down or fall apart. Sometimes you simply need to take a breath, stop, center, refill your energies so that you can come back stronger than you previously were. Take a spa day. Sit and meditate. Take a walk in nature (which is also a form of meditation). Read. It may seem selfish to do so when you have responsibilities, but it you don’t, eventually, you won’t be able to fulfill those responsibilities.
There has to be balance. One can not give until they have nothing left and think they can continue to give. For most of us, we are like a pendulum, swinging back and forth. The point of balance is where the pendulum passes at the fastest speed. We need to do better. We need to take the time to better balance ourselves.
So when we think about it, taking time for ourselves is not selfish, it is actually selfless. It allows us to strengthen so we can continue with our responsibilities but at full capacity rather than running on empty. By taking the time for ourselves, we have the strength to give all of ourselves to those that need.
Being selfish is being selfless.
Think about it. Let it ruminate in your mind. Then take the time and find your balance.

Caring Palms… Success… or Failure?
by Brian Dean
It has been 20 years since I started Caring Palms, in fact immediately after passing the state boards. In that period of time, there have been a lot of ups and downs. The real questions are… Was it a success? and Was it worth it?
In many ways, Caring Palms was a failure. The business never did take off as much as I wanted it to. A good part of that comes down to my not being an advertising genius. I wanted to do things my way, and did not like the games and quick buck advertising gimmicks that a lot of people suggested. I wanted to be above board on all things, and did manage to do that, but it may have cost business.
A lot of people are uncomfortable with male therapists. You have women that are afraid (especially seeing all the headlines about females being abused by male therapists in the news). We also have men that don’t want to be touched by men. Unfortunately, this is an issue that all male therapists face.
There was a competitor that spread lies throughout social media about how I was a pervert. This person became known for not paying her employees, closing a location and letting her employees find out by a sign on the door when they arrived to work, and generally being a liar. And while I’ll never know how much this affected business, I know it did.
The Advanced Body Mechanics and Techniques course (something that all massage therapists need) never reached its potential. Possibly the title wasn’t sexy enough to draw people in.
The business never became an income maker, basically, it never paid me a salary. There was a time when there were three of us and we were making money, to the point that there was money in the bank. Then the Mighty COVID came along and wiped almost all of that away causing me to move to a new location.
Slowly, things started to improve (even though COVID still looms, and a lot of clients are afraid to come out because of it), but now I have to take a step back to focus on me, deal with physical problems I have.
Even with all that failure, Caring Palms is a huge success. While the business has not paid me, it has been able to cover expenses and support itself. Only six times in the last 20 years did I have to take money out of my pocket to cover rent.
Caring Palms set itself apart by adding a wide range of knowledge and modalities to the menu whether that be massage styles or energy work. It set itself apart by doing full 60 and 90 minute sessions rather than the typical spa massages most places do. I wanted to do this, so I did. I felt the clients deserved it. We also spent time before and after each session to find out what was needed and to give additional information. I always felt the care of the client was the most important thing, and put that to the forefront so we treated others like we would want to be treated.
Over 1,400 clients have been seen for massages, Reiki and other energy work sessions, readings and classes. Over 1,202 people have taken Reiki classes. By the numbers, Caring Palms has done 1,373 Reiki sessions, 5,630 hours of massage (75% of those were done by Brian), 70 Mediumship Readings, and 423 hours of Unspecified Energy work (Chakra Cleansing, Cord Cutting, Soul Retrieval, White Light work). Massage for Couples was taught to 45 students, Advanced Body Mechanics to 35, Ascension Theory workshops to 72, Ethereal classes (including Meditation) to 57. All in all, the numbers are not tremendous, but it is the quality of the work and the help that it brought the people that received it that was the important part..
Caring Palms has been selected seven years in a row for the Best of Jacksonville Beach Awards for Massage Therapists, and for Reiki.
We have also received awards from Expertise.com as one of the top massage studios in Jacksonville. This award comes without prompting and costs nothing. We first received this award in 2016 when they notified us and have received it every year since.
So, while Caring Palms never did get as big as I had hoped it would, over the past 20 years it has touched a lot of lives, a lot of souls. It has changed most for the better, and that is what I had hoped it would do. So, just for that, I have to feel it was worth, and it was definitely a success.
Now, I look forward to the “next phase” as Caring Palms transitions into something a little smaller. Moving forward, Myofascial Release (MFR) will be the only massage modality that will be offered, but in the past, that has accounted for 40% of the massage business. Reiki sessions will be offered as well as White Light and other types of energy sessions as well as meditation. Classes of all types will still be offered. Of course, Mediumship Readings will continue to be offered as that is just another form of healing.
So while it seems things are cooling down, they are merely transitioning, and there is still a lot here to look forward to. It is still exciting.

Leave a Review, Enter Our Drawing
|
Leave a review and be entered in a drawing to win a free session. If you have enjoyed the services at Caring Palms, whether that be massage, Reiki, or classes, or something else, please leave a review on one of the review sites like Google, Facebook, or any of the many places that take reviews. Lately, it has been these reviews that have been bringing new clients into the studio, and all have been glad they found us.
Anyone leaving a review will be entered into the monthly drawing to win a free session (massage or Reiki). Reviews made between the first and last day of each month will go into the drawing, and the winner will be pulled on the first of every month. Thank you all that have left reviews, and congratulations to the people who have already won free sessions.
Note: We are asking people not to post on Yelp unless you are a person that posts there regularly. Yelp has some qualifying software that looks at each review, and if you are a regular poster, your comment is deemed "Relevant", otherwise your comment is marked "Not Relevant". While Caring Palms has 20 5-star reviews on Yelp, only seven of them are deemed "Relevant", and one has to go through another step to see the remaining 13.

Guided Meditation CDs Available In-House and Online
The first three guided meditations are now available. We have a small inventory in-house). When these have been sold, we will replenish them (replenishment takes about 10 days). These meditations are also available online as CDs or MP3s and can be purchased through the Meditations Page. If you are looking for a safe meditative journey to relax or work, come see us, or purchase one (or all three) online. Available meditations include, Finding Sanctuary, Working Through Past Experiences, and Visiting With Your Guides. We are hoping to have the other three available within a few months.
Currently, the links to purchase the Meditation CDs are not working. The site needs to see sales every six months else they get taken down. CDs are available at the studio. If you want the audio file, let me know and I will get them to you.

(Note: In some cases, one may be able to enter a class marked 'Closed' with permission of the instructor.)
Please note, a class schedule will be set for the first five months of next year. During that time, there will be several Reiki 1 classes, and one of each Reiki 2, 3, 4. The new class schedule will be available in the January newsletter.

Brian is now doing readings to anyone that wants to sit for one for $50 for up to one hour. Keep in mind, these are mediumship readings, not psychic readings. If you have an interest, please contact Brian and something can be scheduled. These can also be scheduled from the website. For more information on readings, please go to the Mediumship tab on the website, and then you can see several articles about mediumship including what to expect, and what happens during a session.
