Message from the Interim City Manager
|
January 4, 2021
Hello Everyone,
After such a challenging 2020, I think we can all get behind Happy New Year! While we still face some serious challenges, I'm confident we can overcome them if we work together, and look out for each other.
This month I am dedicating the City of Benicia This Week to one of the very unique, very Benicia strengths: Volunteerism. The dedicated volunteers of the many, many organizations committed to making Benicia a better and more caring community are a great credit to our city. They have been there for our community every step of the way since the outbreak of COVID-19. They have put themselves in harms way (volunteering out in the community, providing food and basic necessities, working alongside our public safety staff, working on the roads and freeways to keep our city clean and inviting, and the list goes on and on.)
I know they will continue their efforts, and even redouble them, in this most critical of moments as we deal with this surge, the surge upon the surge that we now face. That said, they could use your help. We have included a fairly comprehensive list of volunteer groups working in our community. If you find one on the list that particularly strikes a chord with you, please consider supporting them financially or by volunteering. Any group not on our list, please reach out to us.
Sadly, I do need to shine a light on one very special and important volunteer organization, The Kyle Hyland Foundation for Teen Support. We had a young middle school student at Benicia High School commit suicide this week, and a few days before that another young man attempted suicide. To say these times are difficult for our community’s children would be a vast understatement. I know parents and educators in our community are doing everything they can to try and balance the safety of our community in regards to COVID-19 and the mental health of our youth, but it is not easy. The Kyle Hyland Foundation is dedicated to working with our community’s youth on just these issues. Please consider that supporting them is one way of helping support our community in addressing this incredibly difficult issue. I also want to take a moment to thank Barbara Gervase, the founder of the Kyle Hyland Foundation for her unwavering commitment to our children and families, especially given the difficulties of keeping up the fight during this pandemic.
Thank you to all of our amazing community warriors working every day to make our community better. And thank you for your interest in the City of Benicia This Week! If you enjoy reading this weekly message, please share and encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to subscribe or text jointhisweek to 22828 (messaging and data rates may apply).

Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant
|
California businesses and nonprofits can now request support from California's $500 million Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant Program. Small businesses and nonprofits are eligible for grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, based on revenue in the most recent tax return filed (2019 or 2018).
For the first round of funding, businesses will have until Friday, January 8 at midnight to apply. Businesses approved for funding will be notified starting January 13. Applicants who submit their application and all documentation in the first round do not need to reapply when the second round of funding opens later in 2021.
This program builds on the Small Business Hiring Credit that launched at the beginning of December.
Note that there have been delays in accessing the state's website due to overwhelming traffic with some glitches and slow loading. Grants are not awarded on a "first come, first serve" basis. All applications received before closing on January 8 at midnight will be reviewed.

Donate Stimulus to do More Good
|
If you're one of the people who received or will receive the second round of stimulus payments, yet find that don't really need it, consider supporting local businesses by purchasing goods from local retailers or meals to-go from local restaurants.
Want to make that stimulus payment go even further? Consider donating all or a portion to any of these worthy causes focused on helping our community members survive the difficulties created by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Volunteer for Benicia Teens
|
The Kyle Hyland Foundation for Teen Support (KHF) recognizes the importance of staying connected during these challenging times. While the Benicia Teen Center is currently closed due to COVID, they are now offering a weekly Virtual Teen Forum. The forum takes place on Zoom every Thursday from 7 - 8 p.m., and is open to all Benicia teens ages 13-19 years.
In these forums, they have topic-based discussions (anger management, stress-anxiety, coping skills, etc.), informal "processing" and fun activities (crafts, games). This is an opportunity for teens to stay connected with each other and with caring adults. To join please use Zoom ID: 702-788-411.
The Kyle Hyland Foundation for Teen Support has a new Teen/Community Awareness program launching in January, the goal of which is to raise awareness with respect to Suicide Prevention, Mental Wellness, Cultural Diversity, Teen Dating Violence, Bullying & Cyberbullying, and Drugs & Alcohol. The KHF is in need of adult volunteers to help with planning activities on the Benicia High School campus and in the community for each week-long campaign. If interested in volunteering, please email kylehylandfoundation@gmail.com.

Eastern Gateway Workshop - Save the Date

The City of Benicia Planning Division will be hosting an interactive remote workshop for the Eastern Gateway Study via Zoom on the evening of Thursday, January 21.
Through this study, the City will update zoning regulations to encourage mixed use development around the intersection of Military East and East Fifth Street. An overarching goal of the study is to facilitate the construction of new housing. At this workshop you will learn about recent progress made on the project and may provide feedback on important aspects of the new zone district, such as allowable uses, building and site design.
To learn more about the Eastern Gateway Study, visit www.ci.benicia.ca.us/easterngateway, and sign up for emails to receive the latest updates including the Zoom link for the workshop.
